The have to be run on a pulse start ballast. Joy and the designer booth told me this. Darren simply email Joy and ask yourself. I HIGHLY doubt they'll leave anyone high and dry, not their style.

I've contacted Reefbrite to find out whether the twinarc needs a pure pulse start ballast to properly drive and switch the bulbs, I'll let you know what they say.

My friend & myself got 1 each of the 250W ones at IMAC. One of them we tried at the show and it changed from 10K to 20K every time it was turned off & on. We were pretty stoked with it- great concept. I tried mine at home but unfortunately only the 10K would turn on, never 20K. I tried for 3-4 days and no luck. Maybe it was the ballast I use (Icecap 250W) or maybe just a defective bulb. I'm not negative on it as it's a new product and a great idea, just wish I knew if there's a way to get the 20K to fire with my setup.

They will work in LumenArc Reflectors as well since you can adjust the mogul. This was confirmed at IMACwest last weekend. Reef Brites pendants are also built for this bulb and will enjoy a sweet spot for both.

Kevin,
The reflectors that ALS designed for mogul and DE were already a little bit longer than the norm but you are right that the Twinarc would benefit from being installed in a longer reflector. A few months back I told Tullio that I would give him a lot of grief if he didnt make a longer reflector just for use with the twinarc and he said that they would. When using a regular refletor, one of the envelopes is in the sweet spot which evenly distributes the light and the other is in the armpit of the reflector, with light which is reflected all over the place. Perhaps in a large enough Lumenarc reflector, it may be possible to position the envelopes so that they are equally centered in the pendant.

Kevin...I'm not jake, oviously, but the fixtures that Tullio was selling were a little longer in order to support the added length of the bulb. At least that's what he told me.

Jake,
Looking closer at this bulb which is revolutionary for sure, what are your thoughts about using these in a standard mogul base reflector that was designed for the discharge tube to be in the center as opposed to them being offset from one another on these new bulbs? I am curious as to what kind of beam effects will this cause, and do you think this could negatively impact corals sitting in the “hot spot” so to speak?

As far as we know, Reefbrite only obtained the rights to manufacture some of the product lines of ALS.
