Tunze Silence pump 8 month review: delivers reliable, quiet performance

By on Aug 24, 2009

This review of Tunze’s 1073.020 silence pump is well over eight months in the making. In that time we have used and abused the ole Silence ’20 in every position imaginable: We used in the basement, we used it on a double decker set up, we’ve pushed some medium and large recirculating skimmers but most of all, we have settled on using the quiet one (not that Quiet One) for an aquarium on our desk. So far this pump has been tested on quite a wide range of applications but it always started and restarted without fail, and it has done so without any maintenance or servicing of the impeller assembly. Any pump that can go through our water pump bootcamp and still be worthy of use in the Reef Builders office will be part of the water pumping arsenal FOR LIFE. Don’t let that low pressure water flow curve fool you, the ~$90 Tunze Silence 1073.020 may be rated for 634gph but even with lack of pressure the Silence ’20 still managed to deliver 350-550 gph under most applications. The pump is available from Aquarium Specialty, Premium Aquatics and The Depot, check out our previous posts for more deets on the line. Can anyone chime in on their experiences with the Tunze Hydrofoamer Silence pumps?

I figured Marine Depot would follow suite with The Shak (formerly Radio Shak) and The Hut (formerly Pizza Hut)

Oh good, I was hoping i wasn't the only person who noticed all these changes.

Wow, I just got interested in Tunze! No only did they not release a product that is almost twice the price of similar products they released one that is cheaper than other similar pumps (Eheim) uses less power, and are not terribly much more economy models (Quiet One).

I would be curious how they stack up in a head to head (pun intended) challenge with the aforementioned pumps.

Mike you are absolutely right about the value of this pump. The Tunze Silence may not have the same maximum head pressure as the similarly flowrated Eheim 1260 which is priced at ~$120-130 but for 90 percent of aquarium applications the Tunze Silence is the better buy. The Tunze Silence 1073.030 does jump up in price to ~$140 for about 750 gph but it has a better pressure/velocity profile.

Man, that is one of the most illiterate posts I have ever made, thanks Jake for being able to decipher what I was trying to say :D

That being said, yeah there's about a $50 jump in price for an extra 160gph at 0ft. But in reality… I dunno, a nice slow trickle through the sump isn't necessarily a bad thing, doubly so when you consider a few hundred gallons per hour as a slow trickle.

Definitely going to need to check these out when my pumps get ready for their way out (or they just don't restart).

Out of curiosity is there a picture of the pressure performance graphs anywhere?
