Awe-inspiring island views from space

We are often captivated by the beauty of coral reefs from below the water’s surface but these awe-inspiring reefs are just as wonderful from space. WIRED put together a stunning photo montage of islands across the globe viewed from far above and we’ve brought some of these incredible images from coral reef zones here for your viewing pleasure. Always wondered about those “swimming pool” islands like that, is there under-water/ground lava tunnels or something that allow water to circulate in and out? Or are those systems isolated from the ocean?

I’m assume there are some kinds of fissures in the rocks since many of these were created by volcanic activity. Would be interesting to see these as well as the tidal effects.

The sandy colored areas on the rim are shallow water over the flats, which is where the water flows in and out of the atoll.
