Ecosystem Aquarium no longer publishing Reef Life Magazine
17 Comments

Like Conan O’brien on the Tonight Show, rumors that Ecosystem is dropping Reef Life Magazine have turned out to be true with the letter that was sent out to subscribers this week. The first paragraph is quoted below:
Due to this difficult economic climate, EcoSystem Publications will no longer be publishing ReefLife magazine. As such, the November/December 2009 issue was the last issue that will be produced. We appreciate your support and are truly sorry we will no longer be producing ReefLife, as we worked very hard to make it one of the best marine and reef magazines available. Instead, Ecosystem Aquarium will be focusing on its vast line of products.
Reef Life Magazine has some really great writers and some of the best pictures around. Even though Reef Life Magazine launched at the beginning of the summer of the worst economy in decades, last Fall it seemed to just be hitting a stride as the staff grew into their britches and started serving up some hot and fresh reef life articles. It sure was nice to see the magazine in Barnes & Nobles and to be able to read Reef Life online. We’re sad to see the fledgling publication go the way of Coco but perhaps another publisher will see all of the potential that the magazine had in print and on-line.

Sad, it was a fantastic magazine.
They have promised to pay authors for the last issue (I had two articles in there), but no check yet. I am crossing my fingers.

I’m sad to see it go

wha? they only put out 3 or 4 issues! I really liked that magazine, but something is strange with that Ecosystem company. They were the original US publishers of Coral Magazine until I got a letter one day telling me that they would no longer be publishing Coral mag in the US and were starting another one, so I let them transfer the remainder of my coral subscription to Reef Life, which came out 6 months later than they said it would and now it barely lasted 6 months. The whole thing seems very flakey.
I always buy these mags when I see them in stores but I am very glad I didn’t renew my subscription when it ran out after the second issue. If they haven’t paid their writers I probably wouldn’t be getting my money back any time soon either…unless I take Miracle Mud as payment.

Much better mag then Coral with the content being based in the U.S which was nice for us readers here. I like Coral but ReefLife was my fav, hate to see it go out like that…..

I renewed with Coral mag and have been very impressed with it. If an article catches your interested there is generally more available online by the same author or interviewee. Most are European based but it is refreshing to see a different point of view. The hobbyist there often have a sound basic understanding of biological and water chemistry needs.
I’d encourage anyone to give that a second chance as customer service is great too. I’d like to see one Reef mag on professional level left!!!

I liked Coral better. It’s like the NPR of Reef publications. They don’t dedicate an article to a topic, the whole rag is on the topic. ReefLife was similar, but I liked Coral more. Heck, I love all aquaria magazines.

Dang it! This was actually my first magazine subscription (partly because of the online option) after buying other magazine issues at stores off and on for years. I still think it was worth it if only for information on nano fish, especially the Trimma/Eviota gobies.

Just purchased a two year subscription in December. Never received any of the Reeflife Magazines. Lets see of they refund this.

@Richard Ross – update us if you do receive a payment
Frankly there are way too many magazines around and many of them are already moving ONLINE …

Hubert, Maybe too many magazines but not many really quality ones with enough reefing “meat” to make them worthwhile. I still enjoy the printed page as much as I consume online. Just gotta keep Reef Hobbyist afloat

Hubert, The @#$tuff#$% available at Barnes and Nobles makes me cringe. Content and ads blurred in some mainstream mag rags. I haven’t read them in years. I support Coral I admit I liked the new Coral better. Photography and content is great.
Moving to online is a matter of surviving. Coral is online too.

I read many of the comments. Ecosystem Aquarium is a professional organization. We have the best products in the world.
Understandably, there are those who are rather upset at the news that we did in fact decide to end the magazine. We will certainly work out any arrangements we had with anyone who purchased a subscription. Feel free to call us directly at (714) 543-4100 – Ask for Leng Sy. If you can’t reach Leng, EMAIL ME directly at clacour@ecosystemaquarium.com and I will address each of you individually.

Myself and my clients will miss ReefLife magazine. Wishing Leng the best with his future projects. Great job with your post above Chris.

Its a shame to see such an excellent magazine only make it a few issues; especially seeing as how the contributing writers write for such good websites as RB, but also make staples for any reefer’s library.
I’m glad that I got each issue!
