Volx Japan’s LeDio spotlights join the LED spectacle at ReefStock

By on Feb 23, 2010

If you haven’t yet heard, Denver’s ReefStock event will be featuring the greatest diversity of marine and reef aquarium LED lights ever assembled. In addition to Ecoxotic, ReefBrite, NanoCustoms, AquaIlluminations and CoralSky, the Nautilus Ballroom at the Denver Downtown Aquarium will also be displaying the latest LED products from Tropical Marine Centre, Marineland and now also Japan’s most popular LED spotlights, the LeDio lamps by Volx Japan. Pictured above is the small army of gears, err LED spotlights from Volx in every color combination they make including the spanking new 9 watt UV LED lamp which is just starting to make the rounds in the land of the rising sun. How cool is that? Now if we could just find a great little fixture or track light to house these seven spotlights we’ll be all set. Huge thanks to our pal Taka for making the arrangements to display these exotics at ReefStock on behalf of Volx Japan.

will any of these companies actually be selling their products at ReefStock or will they just be sitting on a table in front of a smiling sales rep that repeats “Sorry, these are only for display” all day long?

Pickle most companies don’t want to risk fines and having to pay taxes in other states if they are caught selling. Another issue is selling to their customers customers.

You cant actually expect these companies to under cut their customers. There will be vendors their sell some of these products.

That not far to the retail guy who has to make more of a mark up.

Are these in the US yet? Or can we order them straight out of Japan?

@Azurel, I think we will have the announcement of the first LeDio dealer at ReefStock in mid march, maybe sooner.

I understand the manufacturer/wholesaler/retailer relationship and how sales tax works, but seems ridiculous having a bunch of commercial retailers sitting in a room with a bunch of manufacturers and a captive audience of thousands of people with pockets full of money who can’t buy all the cool gadgets and gear sitting out on tables from these cutting edge manufacturers.

Bring a couple cases, sell them at wholesale to the businesses selling goods right next to them and then they can sell them at full retail to the attendees. Problem solved and nobody has to pay for shipping. But I guess I’m just crazy….

Hopefully they’ll set these lights up over a tank full of water with a PAR meter in the water showing some “real life” PAR values. No one cares what the PAR values are through 10″ of air.

@TChong, although there are many lamps that use the same off the shelf heatsink making them look almost identical, between the LEDs used, the optics and drivers there is significantly more equipment here than the $40 lamps you are talking about. Agreed that the price reflects their Japanese (re)manufacture and the buyer is paying a premium for it.

Plus at $40 you are looking at off brand LEDs in a 3000-5500K range that will look ugly as sin over a reef tank. You get what you pay for.

The $40 bulbs i speak of are exactly the bulbs pictured above. After speaking with the company via e-mail, they use all Cree Bulbs and are willing to fit any combo of color options. They also provide a choice of 15, 30, or 60 degree optics.

300% mark-up is disgusting. Sometimes you pay for more than you get.

With the development of high efficiency and high power LEDs it has become possible to incorporate LEDs in lighting and illumination. Replacement light bulbs have been made as well as dedicated fixtures and LED lamps. LEDs are used as street lights and in other architectural lighting where color changing is used. The mechanical robustness and long lifetime is used in automotive lighting on cars, motorcycles and on bicycle lights.
