Following up with Casper the white tang at World Wide Corals

ghost white tangWhile we were in Orlando for MACNA last week we made it a point to stop by the premier LFS, World Wide Corals. Not only is WWC loaded up with a huge diversity of corals, they are also the proud owners of Casper the white tang. Casper is such a shy little fellow that he barely made it out of his hiding spots to come out for the camera but through patience and perseverance we did manage a couple shots which show how unique this white-colored yellow tang is.

One feature which was impossible to see in the tank but which showed up well in the photographs is the small amount of yellow coloration that Casper has at the base of his pectoral fins, and a little bit at the base of his dorsal fin. We hope that these bits of coloration develop as little as possible but if they do, let’s hope they grow into brilliant, discrete patches which only add to the uniqueness of the white tang. World Wide Corals is not selling Casper for any price, but if you are in the neighborhood they’ll at least let you look at him for free.

    In person, I saw a LOT more yellow on him than these pics. Did you mean it shows in the tank, btu not in the pics? Im glad they didnt have him in with the other mutation tang.

    @jeremy

    There is a mutant yellow tang that looks like hes all white, but thats a mulattoish appearance. I thought that was casper until i was kindly informed that he was on in the smaller tank on the Right.

    Maybe thats who you saw instead?

    Yes, I saw both fish. I am not referring to the larger one. I did see noticeable yellow on this fish in person. Albeit, not a lot, but noticeable. I believe he will revert in short order, but I hope I’m wrong.

    I wonder how much they paid the wholesaler/collector.

    I saw him twice when I was in Orlando. (He has become the new celebrity!) The first day, was Monday one week prior to Labor Day. They had just done a water change and he was abit stressed. Interestingly, instead of fading, he looked to have a bit of a yellow tinge to him.

    The second time, he appeared much “darker” pale.

    What an awesome LFS!!!

    I’m guessing that’s the “an offer I can’t refuse” price, but in reality it’s not really for sale :D

    One LFS had beautifully lade out rockwork, absolutely HUGE flat pieces, probably 3-4 feet wide. Too many people asked how much, so the owner simply said, $25 per pound and its yours :D
