Davy Jones’ Skimmate Locker from Avast Marine sinks two ships with one cannonball

By on Nov 04, 2010

Davy Jones’ Skimmate Locker is a dual purpose skimmer drain and automatic shut off device from Avast Marine. Big protein skimmers make a lot of waste and many of us don’t want to keep pulling off the cup to empty the sludge. Skimmate collectors can be a simple as a bucket or as involved as an airtight acrylic cylinder with a ping pong ball to block air flow when the collector is full. The ping pong ball shut off works great but it can stick and it can also be messy once the skimmate gets to that height in the collector. Avast Marine is doing a modern take on an old concept with Davy Jones Skimmate Locker, a protein skimmer waste collector with an electronic shut off switch.

This type of electronic waste level sensor works with all skimmers and when used in combination with the Swabbie automatic protein skimmer neck cleaner, you may not need to clean the cup part of your skimmer for months on end. Even the top loading carbon chamber of the Davy Jones Skimmate Locker will lock away odors for as long as you go between cleanings. The Davy Jones Skimmate Locker comes in three sizes ranging from half a gallon to a gallon and a half and they are only $119 each. We’re still scratching our heads as to how Avast Marine manages to once again deliver so much value but we’ll take it. Arghhh!!!

    Sooooo…What is the point of an automatic shutoff device on a skimmate collector??? Why not just put a drainage fitting near the top and have the overflow go back in the tank/sump? Oh, I get it, because you want to spend $119 on another point of failure in your system…Carry on

    Dude why the negativity?

    I think this is cool. It is a good device, I wish I would have had this yesterday when I found my skimmer overflowing. With the shuttoff it would stop the overflowing.

    Also a device like with would have saved the Oregon reefs.com tank.

    If your skimmer goes crazy and floods back into your sump, you could potentially introduce an entire cup full of thick skimmate in a very short time. This sudden nutrient load can really harm a system.

    If your skimmer goes wild its usually pretty wet and I don’t think it harms anything just dumping back into the sump. It’s not much different then just shutting down the skimmer all together anyway. After my first skimmer overflow I made a skimmate collector with a drain to the sump for when it goes wild and it’s been flawless for over a year and maintenance free at a cost of about $5. I just don’t see the point of over complicating a simple device. We have enough to worry about in this hobby.

    @sistom

    The skimmer may run wet when overflowing but if you already have a full cup of dark skimmate before it starts to overflow then guess what you get? I’ve been in the business for a long time and I can tell you that these types of things are invaluable and are a potential life saver in many cases. It’s not for you….got it…..but don’t say these complicate or there is no point to them.

    Wow! Innovative. Coralvue has been selling the same thing for at least 2 years now.
