Unibody aluminum LED and T5 reef aquarium lights from NanoCustoms are ready

By on Dec 29, 2010

It’s been a long time coming but the unibody reef aquarium lights are gonna be ready to roll off the NanoCustoms assembly line in 2011. First unveiled at ReefStock 2010, the LED + T5 hybrid light was the first Unibody reef light that NanoCustoms teased out showing off their new concept for an aquarium light fixture. Only a small number of these unibody hybrids were released in 2010 while production details were improved. A lucky few aquarists like Cris Cap of AquaticArt have already built amazing displays with the best of LED and fluorescent lighting.

Additionally, NanoCustoms has been working on a few other models of reef aquarium lights with the unibody aluminum construction; there’s the standard LED, the large 10″ universal DIY and the diminutive Fluval Edge-compatible mini LED Unibody. Lastly, there’s also a quad 12″ T5 fluorescent light run at high output specification and an 18″ version of this T5 light is under consideration. These unibody reef lights are all about an inch thick or less and about as close as you’re going to be able to get to lighting up your reef with a fixture that looks more like a MacBook Pro than an aquarium light. Pricing and availability will be announced soon.

Indeed. Our new Haas machine is treating us well, and finally allowing us to push out parts faster so we can put these out mainstream, rather than onesy twosy parts like we have done in the past. Every one of these is machined by us in house.

More CNC goodies to come in the new year too ;)

there should be an 18″ version of that hybrid fixture to compete with the nova extreme pro 18″. I would definitely buy it!

I like the LED & t5 combo, but I would like it a lot more if the chord/plug was in the back instead of the side of the fixture. Other than that, it looks great.

@mk – We are working on the 18″ versions of the T5 and the Hybrid fixtures. We should have both ready some time in early 2011 just after these start moving.

@DrB – if we come out of the back, we cut into the reflector surface, and we want to give you as many lumens into the tank as we can :)

I with jguren that a fixture for the edge would be great!

As DrB stated, I really think the cord should go out the back, even if there is a slight decrease in output. I would not buy the fixture with the cord sticking out the side. I am sure that a large percentage of users who like a clean look (people willing to buy these fixtures) would have the same thought.

@billy – Possibly. Time will tell.

@Paloereef103 – I’m not sure just yet on the 18″ version. The 12″ (shown in the video) has 12 LEDs (6 each side) at 700mA IIRC.

zach, you’d probably want at least 4 of the Pano36 lights to do SPS pretty well in a 90 gallon.

Last word, and i swear ill stop this huge infomercial. (Just kidding jake, we know you guys are a real industry blog)

If you have been on the fence about this product or are about to buy. PLEASE BUY before Jan 7, 2011.

I was going through the pricing engine on our back end servers today and found a huge error in our pricing for the Unibody Hybrid 12 inch. It was priced based on the old platform (fewer LEDS) and without consideration of finishing costs (MilSpec Type II Anodize).

On Jan 8, 2011. The price is going up to its regular, non sale price of $429.95.

Put it this way, If i wasnt the boss, I would be getting a big butt ripping today.

    That is all.

Will you guys make a fixture that is only the vho t5s? Kinda like ATI or Teklight? I would love to have an 18in quad t5 for my planted tank!
