Metis LED from PacificSun, a sneak peek at their new flagship light

By on Jan 31, 2011

PacificSun has a new LED light called the Metis and this one is aiming to be a real knockout LED fixture. In greek mythology, Metis is the god of Wisdom and Skill, which is a fitting name for Pacific Sun’s fourth major LED light platform after the Python, Phobos/Deimos lights and Io LED lights. Building on what Pacific Sun has learned about making an LED reef light, the Metis will include four colors of LEDs, including XPG and XPE LEDs from Cree, and the same controllability that Pacific Sun has included in previous top-end LED lights. The iPod-white finish on the Metis is very easy on the eyes and we’ll soon do a follow-up post with the whole run down on PacificSun’s latest LED reef light.

I believe you mean lightning… unless you are trying to make the corals lighter with your profilux? =D

I am curious about these lights. I would suppose the 4x100W would be for a 6 foot tank like a 210 but then how does that work with the cross braces? Also, what is the quantity make up of the different LED colors? And finally, it seems that there are no optics on these and they are arranged in 2×12 patterns – what is the color and light spread going to be like?

We are using led chips without optics (in standard version). Its this configuration there is no colour spot on the sand – every chip have a default spread of about 125 degree – so this lamp will cover (hanged about 10cm from water surface) aquarium with depth up to 24″.

You did not answer all the questions. With a 6′ 210g tank there are two cross braces. Your 6′ light has LED in 4 groups. How will that work efficiently over a 210? Also, with only two rows of LED, deep can the tank be and still have good coverage. A 210 is 24″ deep, won’t there be some dark areas especially in the top third of the water column before the light can spread? Also, what are the colors of the LED and how many of each?

The lamp has 125 degree spread so it will work as efficient as any other standard lamp, if however this concerns you even with a standard T5 lamp you an alway opt for the Black python modular units.

The lamp has a max side to side spread of 60cm, but for 61cm deep this is no problem at all.

I think the rest of your questions are covered here
