Reef Octopus Nano Overflow goes into production with tightly integrated features

By on Jun 16, 2011

The mysterious Nano Overflow box from Reef Octopus we spied last December has gotten a face lift and is heading into production shortly giving all you nano tank owners the ability to get a small but useful overflow to any small aquarium. Details are scarce at the moment but we do know it is rated at 2,000 lph (around 528 GPH) and it appears to have the return integrated right into the design to keep everything nice and tidy on the back of your tank.

Buildup of air bubbles have plagued hang on overflow boxes since they came to market but instead of employing an external Aqua Lifter to keep it bubble free, the Reef Octopus Nano Overflow uses a venturi on the return, similar to the Mame overflow, to create enough suction to remove any air bubbled building up at the bend.

The Reef Octopus Nana Overflow is contructed from clear acrylic with a black adjustable intake strainer gate. The overflow also looks to use barbed hose fitting built in to make it a breeze to add flexible tubing to the box. These have just gone into initial production and should be available shortly. We will pass on pricing and more details as they come in.

The return is integrated since it serves as the venturi that keeps the siphon active.  I hope there is a check valve on that air line though, since if the venturi gets blocked (we know they do) or obstructed in just the right way, the siphon is broken-tank floods-sump runs dry.

Looks nice though.  I wonder if you could stick a second standpipe in there so it can run like a Herbie/2-pipe overflow…
