Sneak peek at the business end of the AI Nano

By on Jul 15, 2011

AI Nano lens

The AI Nano LED light is no longer just a half an AI Sol as the business end of this fixture clearly shows. Whereas the AI Nano Sol initially just included the same triple cluster of LEDs like the AI Sol, the AI Nano now has its own happy family of LEDs including four Cree XP LEDs, two blue and two royal blue, and one large Cree XM LED presiding over the cluster from the center position.

The diminutive AI Nano measures in at just 4.28 x 5.57 x 1.47 inches (10.9 x 14.1 x 3.7 cm) but at full power the AI Nano runs up to 35 watts; the Cree XM LED are driven at 4.55W each and the blue and royal blue Cree XP-E are running at 2.63 watt each. The whole LED ensemble is focused by the five in one lens with an overall beam angle of 80 degrees which is probably required to spread out all that power.

It’s hard to say what is more exciting, the marriage of Cree’s best whites with their best blue LEDs or that the AI Sol is really a quarter the size of the AI Sol. At just one and a half inches thick the AI Nano may also be packing the most LED power relative to size than any other light in the aquarium hobby. Let’s just hope that Aqua Illumination can keep up with the demand of this high tech LED light for that bargain basement price of $350.

I think I speak for many others when i write, “!!!!”

Huh? This is the line that gets me… “At just one and a half inches thick the AI Nano may also be packing the most LED power relative to size than any other light in the aquarium hobby.”

Not even close… not by a mile. I see $50 worth of LEDs, $30 for a driver, and $220 for “fancy”. Sounds like a Mac to me. ;)

  • Anonymous

    I love my macs

LOL, I love my $299 Dell that I can dual boot OSX or Windows 7 on. ;) Once a person understands that the insides of a Mac and the insides of a Dell are the same, you realize there is nothing stopping you from running whatever OS you want. If you like OSX over Windows, fine, but no reason to pay 3x the $ for the same hardware just to run the software you like, right?

This looks just like Clive’s design with the Big NW LED in the center flanked by blues all around.

This looks pretty nice, do you think it overkill for a 10 gallon?

You can keep your ugly Dell and reef lighting, I’ll put this next to my Eames lounger and Knoll Coffee table on my ADA tank next to my MacBook Pro.. Why, not because I’m an elitist, not because I’m a brand whore, but because I don’t like ugly things. Brands mean nothing, appearance is everything and unfortunately some get it and the rest don’t. In my home we choose to only fill it with beautiful and extremely functional things, everything else does not come in or goes to the trash.

Not to nit pick but you clearly have never manufactured or produced anything other then what you fiddle with in your basement/garage. To bring something to market there are much more in the terms of expenses then just making the fixture. You didn’t mention shipping, marketing or the most important of all DESIGN.

Keep your 2¢ where they belong, in your ugly piggy bank next to the rest of your worthless thoughts.

Similar, but a little more practical ;)

Hahaha.. ummm, my computer sits hidden away inside a cabinet on my computer desk and my lighting sits in a canopy.. no one sees them, so why in the world would I spend 3x the $ on “pretty” when it isn’t even visible. When things are not even visible, I see no reason to spend $ on aesthetics. When they are visible, sure, I will spend a little time and $ making it look good, but I won’t spend 3x the money that the item cost just to make it look pretty.

  • Anonymous

The beautiful thing is you can always turn down the intensity and sort of future proof yourself for any larger aquariums.

We will be putting one over our ADA 30-C (12″ cube)

I wasn’t aware trolls are people that go out and try and INFORM others that there are other less costly options to achieve the same goal. I thought they were people that post just to get a rise out of others. If I were a troll I would just say the AI fixture is a POS and leave it at that, but that isn’t what I said, I said you can get 3x the output for the same cost of you go a different route. I can make my DIY light look like this one in a matter of minutes, just take a piece of white plastic to the waterjet at work and cut out some pieces, glue them together and attach it to the light. $20 in plastic to make my “ugly” light look like an AI light (without the touch sensitive buttons, but since my light is connected to the internet, I have no need for touch sensitive buttons).

In that case, thank you for enlightening us. I’m sure no one here has ever considered the merits of PCs versus Macs.

  • Charles Long

You’re thinking too much in the hardware side of things, Macbooks look awesome(physically) which is why I paid 3x more.  I know I wouldn’t be able to build something as nice as what AI is selling which is why I’ll just pay more for the convenience.

  • http://www.nanocustoms.com/ clive@nanocustoms

I’m tired of comments like this from people who think they know what is involved in the creation of a product, and the appropriate pricing for it.

Building a fixture is still the best way to get the most bang for your buck. No question there. Not everyone has the time, the mechanical skill or tools required to build a DIY fixture. Sure, it doesn’t take much, but there are people that are nervous with the tools, and just flat out don’t have the time to research and build one. That’s where products like this come in, and honestly, $350 for this fixture is extremely reasonable for what you get. I can think of a lot of other products that retail for $350 that certainly aren’t worth the money.

While you may be able to buy the raw materials for an equivalent unit for less than AI is charging, you didn’t have to pay for the design or the tooling for any of the parts, and still make enough profit to pay all your overheads and salaries, not to mention all the advertizing they have to pay for. It amazes me when people start badmouthing the price of a product because the can build it themselves, but I challenge any one of you to build a fixture with reasonable functionality for the price you are claiming, and still churn out 200-500 units a month and make a profit.

Yes, I work for a company that builds fixtures like this. We are a little more on the expensive side, as we are more of a custom “boutique” style operation, and we still have trouble making it from month to month charging more than AI is for their unit. Do we get materials in for a discounted price? Sure, but we have a ton of other things we have to pay for that none of the DIYers have to even think about.

I wonder if this means the next generation Sol will feature a similar LED configuration.

    Your fixture looks like shit….

STFU before you piss someone off that matters.

The world does not revolve around your “hide everything and buy terrible looking items” mentality. Canopies look “old” and “dated” so most aquarists that are hip to anything choose to not go this route. The people who “actually” buy things and have money like things that look good.

Keep buying your low budge half assed gear and I’ll continue to own beautiful looking high end equipment with class and sophistication.

” so most aquarists that are hip to anything choose to not go this route.”

Might want to rethink your “not because I’m an elitist” mentality

  • Anonymous

Generally speaking, people who have good taste don’t purchase things that need to be hidden.

I’m an elitist because I choose to not have a hunk of dead tree cut into a box over my aquarium? No, it means I can think with my brain and avoid taking the easy or cheap route for a better look (personal opinion) and choice.

People who have poor taste always “hate” on people who are forward thinking or can afford/choose to afford more expensive “boutique” items.

You’d probably be jealous or “hate” if I drove a $180,00 Porsche Cayenne instead of a $30k VW Toureg, wouldn’t you?

  • Anonymous

If they do then I’ll be interested to see if it fixes the prism effect issue.

  • Anonymous

If you want to inform people, start your own blog… I’m sure people would come form miles around for your “valuable” information. Just make sure you have some credibility before doing so.

Also you fail to realize that not everyone might have access to a “waterjet” or have plastic in stock.

Not to mention if you can produce such a quality light in such little time you may want to start producing them, AI can barely keep up with their demand now. You could be a million as you like to say “in a matter of minutes”!

  • Anonymous

Oh the reason you don’t run OSX on a non Mac is for the simple reason it is illegal. Some might hold themselves to a higher standard and believe that stealing isn’t right.

  • Anonymous

I’d like to apologize to anyone who had to read through the nonsense, I’ve simply grown tired of the misinformed “informing” and got caught up in the banter. Become educated and earn some merit along with having credibility before trying to apply your twisted logic in a real world conversation. People like this are absolutely ruining the chance for any new hobbyist to make a choice for themselves.

The world doesn’t revolve around you, there are other places besides your home town and its terribly hard to swim when your sea is filled with garbage.

  • Anonymous

What is this prism effect? I think I know what you are referring to but I’ve also heard it called a dozen other names.

Assuming you are talking about the heavy blue cast to shadows like you’d get from any LED light source with mixed colors I don’t think there is an easy way to remedy the problemDoes the original AI unit have this issue? Can you provide a link as I’d like to look into it if so.Thank you for brining up a subject the uses intelligence and is actually worth mentioning.

  • Anonymous

Huh? Nothing illegal about it as long as you purchase a license. Only thing is Apple will not offer you tech support.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3PQR2S2EAZUDJKVYUCKLCWJ37Q Micheal

There’s the key “better look” and I’m glad you put in parenthesis (personal opinion), because in the end that is what it is.  What you think “looks good” might not be what someone else thinks looks good.   I understand the responses you’ve given have been to another person for other reasons, however there are others out there that like the look of wood, that it does in fact look good (personal opinion) to some, that the “old” and “dated” has a touch of elegance that has a warmer feel than a space age looking piece of sterile shiny white plastic.   And by wood I mean a nicely designed canopy made with care, not production line crap with the wood veneer wrapped around a piece of particle board.

You claim to be “hated” on yet it seems that you’re “hating” those who don’t have your view who aren’t as “forward thinking” as you, and that is what makes you an elitist.

FYI, I really could care less if you drove a million dollar McLaren F1 or if you had a municipal bus pass as your mode of transportation.   The only reason I would care is if you rattled off all the “pretty” things you have, and then put down others because they don’t have them, or don’t think they’re pretty.

FYI(2), I think this is a great fixture at a great price, a MH fixture will easily cost you $150 for a nano, and not having to replace bulbs ever year will pay this guy off in no time, combined with being able to dim it.  It almost would be a no brainer to purchase, and if you like the aesthetic qualities of it that’s simply a bonus.

John…I don’t know if it has a formal name. I know Jake calls it the “disco ball” effect as him and I have talked about it.

At any rate, I’m talking about the rainbow of colors that the edges of shadows give off under the Sol units. I believe it is due to the lenses which make the light highly focused so when the light pass through the water and bounces off an object like live rock, the edges of the shadow have this strange spread of colors. Perhaps the wider lenses will fix the issue.

  • http://www.nanocustoms.com/ clive@nanocustoms

The color shadows, or ”disco ball effect” seen in the aquarium is from having separate discrete color sources. The farther apart they are, the more pronounced the effect will be. This fixture will still have the same issues as the standard Sol fixtures. The only way around this issue to to have multiple LED die colors in the same package, similar to how Kessil is doing their setup. Lens angle has nothing to do with it.

You’re so wrong it makes my head hurt.

You by law can’t install OSX on anything but a Mac machine per their user agreement. Its the law, you also can’t install a clean copy from disk without using other software to manipulate the disk image (ISO), this also goes against their user agreement and you break a handful of other laws.

  • Anonymous

You led it to this with your less then intelligent comparison of your lunch money Dell compared to a Mac.

  • Anonymous

first time I’ve heard of that Clive…good info. I’m curious if it has to do with color sources why I don’t see the same effect with my Ecoxotic fixture that also has the colors spread out.

  • Anonymous

I appreciate your post and understand you.

I think my message was lost once I became upset with the fact that people who really don’t know what they are talking about can spout of any damn thing they like.

I should have simply stated, don’t compare budget DIY hack jobs to a professionally crafted and refined piece of equipment.

People like myself will pay the money for an item like this as it will fit in better with our life style.

  • http://www.nanocustoms.com/ clive@nanocustoms

With the Ecoxotic setups, the shear number of LEDs used and close spacing helps reduce the effect, but it is there. With the AI setups using higher wattage, and fewer LEDs, the effect is more noticable. Some people aren’t bothered by it much, like myself, but others go nuts over it.

  • Anonymous

that was my second guess was the power of the LEDs in the AI setup. Makes sense.

  • Anonymous

When we designed the Ecoxotic Panorama fixture this was taken into strong consideration. We didn’t like the look so it made more sense to have more lower wattage LEDz and keep the aesthetics of the aquarium similar to what people are accustomed to.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3LLNDZ5XJ6ZQ76J2VLDUQD5WOA Micheal

That’s a fair enough assessment, and I don’t disagree with it.

  • Anonymous

Thank you for editing Mr. Ciotti. While I generally agree with what you had said, it was rough seeing someone I respect totally lose it. Yesterday, -1. Today +1. You even out. Greatly appreciated.

  • http://www.facebook.com/landon.lasseter Landon Lasseter

This post made me laugh, because at first I thought it was a joke, then I realized this guy was serious.  If you could legally install OSX on other hardware, don’t you think someone would start mass producing cheap macs? Oh wait, someone tried…. how did that go for Psystar?

  • Anonymous

I don’t mind loosing my own mind form time to time, but I owe more to the hobbyists then to go out and be disrespectful.

I’ll be the first one to admit my faults, I was at fault..

Glad it didn’t go unnoticed, thank you!

You know, from the days you were working at ADG, there was a huge hype about you that I didn’t quite fully understand from the few chance times we talked, it was probably because they had you doing freshwater runs, but through this string of posts, I think I understand it a bit better now.

  • Ari Stein

Anybody know if this unit will be compatible with big brother sol?

  • Anonymous

Well, hopefully that is a good thing. If not feel free to elaborate, I’m always willing to improve myself.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QSDPQ6KDZJ64Q25D2NVBTL2YTM wood

I feel that I have a pretty good grasp of most things freshwater, and we had started talking about nature aquariums, and some of the comments you made were rather amateur.

We had never talked reef set-ups, or anything related, so over the past year, reading the comments you have left, and your input on subject matter, its quite clear that you have a firm grasp of what you’re talking about.

Which leaves me to say, kudos to you on your Iron Aquascaper title and other freshwater achievements.
