Maxspect Mazarra LED branches out into the S and P series

By on Jul 20, 2011

The highly anticipated third generation LED light from Maxspect, the Mazarra LED, will be available in two separate types of fixtures, the Mazarra S Series and the Mazarra P Series. We first got a look at the Maxspect Mazarra at Aquarama where we were also able to make a video introduction of the new Mazarra LED. Both the S and P series Mazarra LED lights will now have an onboard LCD for simple programming and they will sport the same general shape and appearance, with the main difference existing under the hood and in overall power level.

First to land in the aquarium market will be the P series Mazarra which will have four channel control, wireless controllability and it’ll be rockin higher end LEDs such as the blinding Cree XM-L, Cree XP and Rebel ES LEDs. A follow up model to the P Series Mazarra will be the UV420 edition which as the name implies will have a couple UV LEDs under the hood to get the most coloration from some of the shallow water coral species. The S series Mazarra will be different mostly in lacking the wireless contollability and having only two channels of color control, but the stock editions of the S series Mazarra will also be equipped with the more economical Bridgelux LEDs.

My only gripe with this fixture, and correct me if I’m missing something, is that you are going to have to dial down the XM-Ls a pretty good deal to get anywhere near 20K color. As an example, the AI Nano is using 4 blue LEDs (2RB/2CB) per NW XM-L. I couldn’t quiet understand in the video if they said the XM-Ls will be NW or CW. Sounded like he said 8k, but also “natural” white. If they are truly NW, it might be too yellow for most tastes. Regardless, this is a slick fixture, but it would have been cool for them to throw in some lower temp whites mixed with more blues.

Gabe you can mix and match the LEDs to suit your taste and you can dial down the XM’s on their own channel. You can even have the XM-channel ramp up and down independently of other channels so your corals can get a nice PAR boost during the middle of the day.

Jonathan the Mazarra S and P series will actually be surprisingly affordable. Pricing hasn’t yet been pinned down but it will be competitive with the AI Nano, especially if you plan to run more than one.

The P series is already priced and orders are already being taken by Salty Supply, TB Aquatics and Premium Aquatics.  First US orders will be arriving soon. S series final specs and pricing will be released soon, but will be a great option for customers who want a more “simple” lighting solution and not want ALL the bells and whistles.

    The P-series are using 4 Cree XM-L T-6 with a color temp of ~7 to 8K.
We also use 4 Bridgelux in the range of 12-14K
Luxeon Rebel Blue and Royal Blue- 3 of each and 2-420 NM chips.
The light is a very crisp white with a hint of blue with NO hints of yellow at 100% on all channels. Each channel can be adjusted from 1% to 100% so it is easy to dial in whatever look you want.
Each LED is also swappable, so you can put what ever mix of chips you want to get your desired color effect.

    Dear Jake Adams.
“…the S series Mazarra which will have four channel control, wireless controllability…”
“The S series Mazarra will be different mostly in lacking the wireless
contollability and having only two channels of color control…”

    Which one is it?  :)

The P-series is the first for introduction and will be the top of the line w/4 channels
The S-series will be the more economical version with less features and 2 channels. Specs are not finalized on the S-series for the US yet.

Brian, these look great, makes me wish I was starting a new tank.  Thanks for all the help with my G2.

Why does Patent infringement come to mind?

    HUh?

Actually a valid point that effects the whole industry. If the product is allowed on the open market with no royalty it has resounding effects within the whole industry that has been subdued right now. We can not market in the USA for this exact reason so it is a very valid point that effects mutliple companies and some very big ones as well.

I like to stay out of this stuff, but yes. The Patent issue is very real. My company, Nanocustoms was lined up to start integrating PFO technology into our products when the Orbitech patent storm developed. PFO soon entered bankruptcy and our product family suffered.

As a result of the Patent case, we have been injured badly and must fight our fights with an arm tied behind our backs. Although our industry isn’t as large as most, we still have to play by the same rules. Regardless, this product looks promising.CheersChris

Nice try.  I, for one, am getting tired of your self-serving advertising plugs and back-pedalling.

Jake – thanks. I didn’t mean to sound negative about the fixture. It is very sharp and with the ability to swap more rb/cbs in place of the 12-14K lux’s make the color possibilities pretty endless. My only point was that if you could power all 4 XM-Ls at 100% and still work the blues up to get closer to a 20K look you would be throwing out a silly amount of PAR here. Thanks for the response too Brian.

These look very cool and promising. Any word on when they’ll hit the states?

Is the Ecoxotic Panorama inferior to this product?

Nice looking unit impressed except the rail mounting looks a little hideous to be in my living room unless Im hiding it in a canopy.

Interesting to note since I just read the article here on RB about the fans clogging up on lower end units, Maxspect chose to use one fan on this? A single point of failure? How does that fit into this article that RB touted MaxSpect in?
