Raja Ampat Indonesia is a non-photosynthetic coral heaven
By Mark van der Wal on Aug 26, 2011
This video of Raja Ampat is pure NPS Heaven. . . if you can ignore the soundtrack. Cirque du Soleil music isn’t the ideal tribute to this great video of Eastern Indonesian aposymbiotic corals. But taste aside, thanks to the diver who captured their vivid colors in their home turf.
The variety and abundance of non photosynthetic soft corals is unbelievable: Dendronepthya in every color and shape and you gotta love the patches of orange Scleronepthea which may cover a few square feet yet don’t seem to grow any taller than a few inches. This Raja Ampat reef site is prime real estate for azoox corals. Seriously, see how few photosynthetic corals you can find. Don’t forget to bump it to 720p!
