mcculoch clownfish

If you’ve been hankering for one little tank-bred Mcculochi clownfish your chances to get this black devil darling of a clownfish is about to get a whole lot more affordable. Tonight LiveAquaria will post the first new specimens of the captive bred Mcculochi clownfish for just $399. The story behind these little demon anemonefish is a very unique one since the fish were bred by Kevin Kohen at LiveAquaria, the larvae were raised by ORA and it is accurate to say that these captive bred marine fish are a unique joint-breeding venture between ORA and LiveAquaria.

If you’ll recall LiveAquaria’s director kevin Kohen kept a pretty comprehensive log of their breeding successes back in 2009 and ORA will soon also have the skinny on how they partnered up to produce this satanic adorable clownfish. Did we mention that Mcculoch’s clownfish are aggressive? Well they’re not, they’re downright evil but still like really rare as far as clownfish go.

wonderful, I’ve been wondering why l.a. only let a few go to the general public.

I found it interesting that they shipped the eggs to ORA to be raised opposed to shipping the actual brood-stock as to not break their bonds. Pretty crazy!

Moving spawning clownfish pairs disrupts their spawning and can take a while for them to start again. Much easier to just move the eggs…

Thanks Tim but I read the article! My Clownfish that haven’t been spawning for a year since I moved already taught me what you are trying to force feed me!

Wasn’t trying to insult you… and its not that delicate of a process… maybe if you “force feed” them a little more they would spawn for you ;) A year is a long time for them not to pick up again. You could raise the temps too.

I’ve raised clownfish from clutch to adult plenty of times, please stop insulting my intelligence. A year isn’t long when waiting for a disturbed pair to continue spawning again. Some clownfish never continue laying after such circumstances. One must also consider other tank-mates, if a female clown is on the defensive due to a hostile wrasse (or even complacent/lazy without other fishes) it is common for them not to lay.

To ship fertilized clownfish eggs across the states is a delicate process.

Very nice! I’m interested to know how aggressive they are for you to call them satanic haha! More than a maroon?

At Lord Howe Island there are sea turtles that graze on the very abundant Entacmaea anemones.  If it weren’t for the A. mccullochi aggressively defending the anemones they’d probably eat them all.  They bite their eyes and face and pursue them relentlessly across the reef.

Not aggressive?  I have only had my pair for about 6 months and would consider them highly aggressive.. With recent aiptasia problems they are spending large parts of the day chasing the cleaner shrimp around.

How was he insulting you? If anything, he was agreeing with you?

    Very interesting!

Even Chuck Norris respects the Mccullochi!

In that case, there obviously must have been a good reason for them to do so, instead of just shipping the spawning pair(s). You probably answered your own question in your first post…no need to get defensive. I don’t think Tim was trying to condescend to you. I hope your fish resume spawning for you.

I was wondering that, too. Seeing as how the juvenile in the pic is sharing quarters with a good-sized neon dottyback (and I don’t see any tattered fins!), they must be capable of holding their own and then some. ;)
