Simple, clean nano aquarium makes big impression

We love well edited aquariums and in many cases, less can be more. This nice video of a very clean aquascaped ADA nano aquarium by YouTube user digitallyblue took a simple approach to make a big impact in a small scale. Using an 8 1/2 gallon ADA tank along with a five gallon sump and a nine-gallon refugium, it is lit by LED spotlights and uses a Vortech MP10 for water movement.

We really like the choice of livestock and the balance between coral and rock, giving a nice range of color and texture within the design. The abrebottom surely helps with the cleanliness and maintenance of the tank, similar to the Ecoreef concept we’ve championed the last two years and it is nice to see more of these types of tanks in the wild.

Why do you “like the choice of livestock” when that poor Flame Angel is being crammed into only 8g?

That mp10 looks like an mp60 in that thing!

I don’t agree with flame angel either but that tank is 24″ from end to end. That gives the fish 24″ of swimming in one direction.

Would you change your mind if I said to keep a flame angel in a 60 gallon tank? I mean it is almost 10x the size, right? Yet a 60 gallon cube is 24x24x24. The flame angel would have the same 24″ to swim but now it is different because there is more water?

Just playing devil’s advocate here. I don’t like seeing angels in anything less than a 4 foot tank with lots of natural food to graze on. The volume of water the tank can hold isn’t as important as the length in my opinion.

IMO Even most dwarf angels do better in way bigger tanks.  While the dimensions are really long, it’s not a very wide tank or very tall, giving the fish not a whole lot of room.  Nevermind the fact that dwarf angels love to have a lot of rock to pick at. ;)

Thanks for featuring my tank!!  As an avid follower of reefbuilders I was shocked to see my own tank in my rss feed this afternoon.

I’m sorry for the flame angel, and yes, I agree the tank was too small for it.  I have shut down this tank months ago, as I’ve moved from Canada to Australia, and the Flame Angel currently has a new home in a 100+ gal tank.

This was my first attempt at a nano reef, and I can’t wait to get started on a larger build in the future.

It is one of the best nano tanks I have ever seen though – I hope I didn’t sound rude :) !
