Lightning strikes twice with two incredible red Fungiid disc corals

By on Jan 12, 2012

Ridiculous red flame tentacles adorn this dark Ctenactis slipper coral from Cherry Corals.

We don’t know what the heck is going on with the incredible disc coral above but whatever it is, it’s unbelievable. Elongated red tentacles on top of a dark colored coral polyp looks like this Ctenactis is on fire, it almost defies what we think of when it comes to awesome disc corals. Cherry Corals will soon be sharing this incredible red-flaming tentacle disc coral and whoever gets this tiny Fungiid will be guardian of a really awesome, one of a kind coral, but Russo’s Reef also has an incredible coral up their sleeve.

Not only does this awesome Ctenactis slipper corals have an unbelievable red polyp coloration, it also appears to have blueish purple tentacles that could turn this coral into a mighty package of color. Ctenactis disc corals show up very infrequently in the aquarium trade, usually greenish brown or grey, sometimes with a pink purple edge but to find one with a solid coloration like Russo’s Reef is a killer surprise. We know there’s a lot of lurking Fungiid coral fans out there so this week they should be especially on the lookout for these two beautiful Ctenactis slipper coral specimens, as well as some of their counterparts which may have yet eluded discovery by someone with an eye for coral.

very cool but 500 bucks for a coral the size of a single square of eggcrate is pretty steep. i’m actually a little curious if they will maintain that color once they grow up. anyone ever seen an adult one?

  • Todd Cherry

I know its steep and thats exactly what I thought when I bought it.  I laid out a mint for two of them.  1 for sale, 1 for our farm program.

I can attest that Cherry indeed paid a mint for this coral. You must keep in mind the rarity of this item and also the fact that it can be propagated rather easily.  It is also from Australia. We have another vender we supplied with one a year or so ago. He is propagating one of these in a green house with great success. He started with one only a bit bigger than this and now has 4 or 5 the size of a silver dollar.  It is great for the industry to be able to aquaculture items such as these.

I’m sure they did command a high price even at wholesale. Don’t get me wrong, I agree they really are spectacular and I’m not trying to insult anyone. But I’m sure you’ve witnessed small frags or juvenile corals change color as they grow (I have), so I’m just curious if anyone has ever seen adult ones with this type of coloration. If it’s not just characteristic of juveniles, there should be adults with the same coloration somewhere.
