Ride along a deep diving submersible beyond the reefs of Roatan

4

We’ve been totally digging all the uber deep water reef fish being collected in Curacao as well as wondering what their habitat looks beyond the mesophotic reef zone. Thankfully, a video camera was rolling when another deep diving sub took a trip down to 600 feet in Roatan, Honduras, a short distance away from where all the fabulous Curacao reef fish are coming from. And wouldn’t you know it, one of the first fish spotted on this deep dive in Roatan is the gorgeous little Lipogramma robinsi and shortly after are some deepwater crinoids, some nondescript gobies and what appears to be some Hemianthus sp. anthias.

It’s funny how I had no idea that fish existed up until a month ago, but when I saw it in the video I knew exactly what it was.

looks like Hemanthias aureorubens, a fairly dull anthiine.  I also saw a Gramma melacara!  Definately excited to see the next deep reef fish these subs find!
