StarkLED Blunova offers a wide range of features in a small LED package

By on Apr 12, 2012

The BlueNova from StarkLED is an interesting new LED light with built wireless capability and control. StarkLED is a company completely new to the LED game, but feature wise they’ve seem to have hit the nail right on the head. These 10 x 6 x 2 inch fixtures feature three LED arrays with a total of three CREE XM-L Cool White and six XP-E Blue and six Royal Blue LEDs all running at 5 watts. The StarkLED blunova uses 90 degree lenses allowing a 30 by 30 inch coverage for a balance of depth penetration and spread.

A built-in controller in the Blunova offers dimming of individual LED’s, sunrises, sunsets, moonlight simulation and thunder simulation. The StarkLED Blunova also comes with a built-in 2.4GHz wireless module, which is compatible with StarkLED Wireless Controller. Although details are lacking on the StarkLED Wireless Controller, we are assuming it will release soon. Check out the StarkLED website here. The fixtures can be ordered through your favorite retailer or stores can order them through Sea Dwelling creatures.

So it’s a direct copy of the new AI design using Cree XM-L whites and Cree XP-E blue+royal.  I DIY’d basically the same thing, except double the diodes and using neutral whites, and hooked it up to my Apex.

Oh… where’s Clive?  Is it even possible to run the XP-E’s at 5 watts?  The spec sheet says a maximum of 1000 mA forward current and 3.5Vf at that point.  Methinks the facts are confused here.

Thats pretty good coverage for how small it is.

If you were running XP-Es at 5 watts you’d be overdriving them like crazy.  They wouldn’t last long at all.

Also, it’s a AI vega before the Vega comes out with one less cluster.  It better be priced as such or this thing isn’t going to gain any traction in the market.

It’s pretty much a copy of the new AI I think, is this chinese?

This is exactly why a company shouldn’t announce a product months/years before they can actually produce and get it to market.

  • Clive Bentley

Yup. Serious overdrive, and not a lot of benefit from doing so. I’m sure it’s just a marketing goof.

It is quite surprising to see the LED setup being a direct copy of AI, but certainly not the first time we have seen this. The black antenna out the side is a major turn off for me.

  • Clive Bentley

With supposed 90 degree optics, it only take 15″ for 30″ coverage. That doesn’t necessarily mean that the light at the edge of that spread is useful. If the lenses are the same quality as AI, then the coverage should be pretty decent. If they are knock-offs, then all bets are off. It’s amaizing how much a poorly designed lens can cripple a fixture.

so my tank is going to be about 500 yards away from my wireless router with an antenna like that?  really? come on now.

  • Clive Bentley

Most likely. The website has a selection of other Chinese fixtures on it, as well as having virtually no contact information. Agora Pacific (listed in the bottom of each web page) is a California based international trading company, so take that for what you will.

Yeah, wireless control ability?  Meh…  wires are already going into the thing for power, why complicate things more by having a wireless board inside it (and the controller)

It looks like some sort of router, cable box, or cb radio transmitter, or something…

Thanks, Clive.  My XP-E’s are run at 700mA max, IIRC.  5W is ridiculous as you stated.  And agreed, wtf is up with that antenna?!

  • Clive Bentley

If it was any bigger it might start getting OTA HDTV!

MSRP of 499.99 – from SDC’s facebook page.  Any one know where there are any videos of this in action?

Hah!  I DIY’d my rig with DOUBLE the amount of diodes for less than that.

I can’t wait for the chinese Radion

  • reefergeeker

lol… agreed. I can’t belive they beat AI to the shelves…AI really needs to get their $#*% togther. It makes me wonder about the health of the company.

Eric here….SDC loyal employee:)  I went through the features with the manufacture and now fully impressed.  Here is a list of capabilities:
    1. Power on to a sunrise feature…takes about 10 minutes/Power off to Sunset feature…again a 10 minute cycle and finalizes on the moonlights which are dimmable for soft or brightness…..cool.

    2. Hold the “M” (mode) button for 5 secs and you get a lightening storm effect in your tank for about 10 minutes or so.  Pretty cool.

    3. Advanced feature when holding two buttons at the same time allow you to scroll through each of the 3 clusters, and make total color and brightness adjustments to each of the 3 clusters…..another cool feature.

    4. Three memory presets that can save your personalized settings at touch of a button.

    5. Wireless (already mentioned)…coming soon…..hand remote not yet released.

    6. USB connection so you can control your personalized settings from the computer…..all this will be upcoming when the software is released, and will be a download from the website.

My complaint…..timers shut the unit off in one click….and don’t leave the moonlights on.  The antenna looks cool to me….but I understand people’s preference.

Benefits….Price price price…..yes this was a unit made specifically to compete against the same AI range….but at a better price, and not being totally familiar with their features…can’t really comment on that.

Factory totally backs up the product and Sea Dwelling will support any and all problems with the units….so you don’t have to worry about refunds or exchanges.  So far….really good and no problems:)

Is there any ETA on the wireless controller or the software?
