This 1350 gallon reef aquarium owned by Peter Hyne is a beautiful system and well designed jumbo reef aquarium. Calling the system the “tank of the four masters” is a bit presumptuous, but in the end it doesn’t really matter. The tank is stunning and that is all what really counts. The 1350 gallon reef aquarium is well explained in the video but you can also keep reading for more system info.

The main display is L shaped and measures 8 feet long by 3 feet wide by 2.5 feet tall at the short length. The long end measures 16 feet long by 3 feet wide by 2.5 feet tall. This adds up to a volume of around 1350 gallons, or 5110 liters. Three MH/T5 Aqua Medic units and sixteen Orphek PR-156 units provide lighting for the system. Two Abyzz 420 on a Closed Loop serve as circulation. A 250 gallon sump contains three large size Skimz reactors containing GFO, carbon, and biopellets.

A Schuran Jetstream II skimmer infused with ozone from a Clearwater CD10/AD 1250 mg/hr ozone reactor provides the bulk of the filtration. Two set of mangrove planters lit by two StrayLight 290 watt plasma lamps along with a 50 gallon refugium serve as additional biological filtration. A Schuran Jetstream II Calcium reactor keeps up with the calcium demand. A Profilux 3 Elite plus keeps the system running and two Generac 17KW natural gas-powered generators serve as a backup in case of power outrages. A 150 gallon QT system, and 150 hospital tank are used to QT and treat fish. Additional information can be found at their website.

“Calling the system the “tank of the four masters” is a bit presumptuous,”

I believe Peter’s reference to the four masters is taken entirely out of context and is quite misleading. Peter, aided by Shawn Wilson (Mr. Wilson) have been anything but presumptuous, quite the contrary. That reference is meant to pay homage to tanks and build styles that Peter admires and to aquarists that in his opinion have advanced the hobby – hence the “inspired by” preface in each relative section of the tank.

You’ll rarely meet a more humble and forthright group of individuals than Peter, Shawn and those working on the “nineball” build – Especially when it comes to giving of their time assisting other aquarists following the build.

    Awesome system.

Goes to show you what you can accomplish if you have an absolute boatload of money to spend on it :D

I agree, the “four masters” concept, while a bit cheesy, I thought was meant to honor four other highly accomplished aquarists.

I do find the “best practices” label on the web site presumptuous though.

  • CalmSeasQuest (Tom)

The best practices “label” on the website is simply a link to a repository of collected works on a wide variety of marine subjects from individuals such as Ching Chai, Mr. Wilson and Randy Holmes-Farley.

It does not relate in any way to Peters tank, I fail to see how it would be determined to be “presumptuous”.

great system…though  ‘four masters’  is over the top claim and that ambition is pointless to me,the tank itself is worthy enough to be a stand alone master-piece….varieties of live-stocks,very close to natural ambiance in lighting(which is easily ignore by most hobbyists when complementing/criticizing),state of the art Q-system…all in all it is a well thought out project where money is no concern…

Because in a hobby where so many different methodologies/techniques have been demonstrated to be successful, I don’t think there is a such thing as a “best practice”. That being said, I enjoyed reading the link and appreciate the work that went into it.

he isnt saying HIS tank was built by the 4 masters, he is building his tank based on the inspiration of 4 other large tank builders that have done well, at least that is what i have read. I have been lucky enough to be following this build for a year or two now and i must say i dont know of a nicer looking or more well thought out tank. If something doesnt work, its not just kept for the sake of keeping, it is replaced and the proper item is put in its place, i cant even begin to imagine the total cost of this build so far, i thought i might faint, but man is it fun to watch. The minds that have contributed to that tank are just brilliant, they get pretty deep into stuff in that thread, lots of fun to keep up with. keep up the great work guys !

One of the best down to earth guys in the world.
The man actually answered some of the questions that i had personally.
    Kudos to him

So who exactly are supposed to be the “Four Masters”.    I seem to remember reading where one of the “masters” has some fairly bad practices as far as quarantine procedures (or lack there off) amongst other things.

Not to take anything away from Peter or others with VERY large tanks like this,  other people have tanks just as awesome just not at this scale, they just don’t necessarily have the resources to make something this large happen, and often those who do have those resources (actors, sports stars, etc) go big with fake coral inserts that look tacky :D

Hmm I wonder if that guy over in Europe(?? Netherlands?) with the incredibly long curved glass tank is one of the masters, Pieter something or other. Or David Saxby, he’s got an incredible tank as well, hell I’ve seen my fair share of 1000G+ sized reef tanks that were impressive, hard to nail it down to 4 of the best “masters”

Today I learned that photography – a profession, art form, and scientific process that some people have devoted the last 200 years or so to perfecting doesn’t have enough ‘things’ to compare to the encompassing hobby of reef aquariums.

Guess I need to spend more time “working on my aperture”!

Its obviously a really amazing tank, but as someone who enjoys photography as much as reefkeeping, that part of the video really annoyed me.
