Aquarium a key focal point in this modern kitchen design

By on May 15, 2012

This modern kitchen design utilized an aquarium as one of the main focal points as an interesting backsplash. The kitchen was designed by Darren Morgan with clean lines, white cabinets and a combination of surfaces and lighting to create this one-of-a-kind kitchen.

“I wanted this kitchen to literally come alive within the architecture surrounding it while still performing beyond expectation on functional level. My aim is to encourage a relationship between user and kitchen right down to knowing the names of the fish and having the functionality tailored to the user’s lifestyle,” said Morgan about the design.

“The remotely operated doors and custom made aquarium breath life into this kitchen while the island introduces softer geometry and mood setting colour. This kitchen fits any social occasion or time of day. Achieving ergonomic efficiency and aesthetic satisfaction on every level is the reason for this design,” he adds.

The semi-stark nature of the aquarium fits with the design and we can definitely see some of the design elements from aquariums like the Ecoreef or even some of the more artistic implementations from Coral Morpholigic’s “Morphologic Studios.” Either way, we can see a simple yet elegant design and restraint in a system like this. How would you design this aquarium to compliment this sleek kitchen?

WOW!!! Thats one freaking cool kitchen!

Have to say that island is what caught my eye the most, the bleached white rock with air bubbler aquarium… not so much.    And that fridge!?   As nice as it is, I can see that thing looking like crap after kids (and adults) open it a few times unless you have a full time maid keeping it clean :D

That said, it doesn’t even look like a kitchen until you’re right on top of it, which I think is the main point of it.

The tank is definitely not up to the kitchen. I understand the client probably isn’t interested in a reef but there are lots of cool ways to do a fish only tank.

And I guarantee they do have a maid that comes at least once a week — per hour it’s a lot cheaper than having the tank serviced.

Being a cabinet maker, I appreciate the craftsmanship that went into that island, but what a waste of good countertop space. You have 18″ of completely useless space on either end of it, unless you want your glass of Dom Perignon to slide off onto your improperly done hardwood/laminate flooring (notice the side-by-side butt joints to the left of the island, they are supposed to be staggered).

Now that being said, I do realize that this is much more form than function, and I do have at least some respect for that. Not enough to keep me from being sarcastic apparently lol.

And agreed with the below posts— the reef is cool but doesn’t seem to fit this kitchen just by looking at the pic. Most likely, the place looks much more elegant in person than this pic can do justice to.

I’m sorry, but I think that kitchen is hideous and its only going to get more hideous over time.  Reminds me of bad kitchens from the 70s.

    The photography isn’t even good.

Umm, no. Tank is weak. Really weak. All the bs references in the world to it “breathing life” into the space, etc. aren’t going to help it. Sorry. It’s just silly.

Different strokes for different folks guys, although I dont like the island for exactly the reason that Matt Meadows mentioned just lost space and not very functional, overall the tank is not all that bad depending on what the owner wanted.

Personally if you have all that money for a place/design like this they are probably going to have a aquarium maintenance guy there and could do better. A touch on the sterile side for me but with a few(lots) finishing touches they could do something nice, the potential is there.

It is obvious this kitchen is not set up for a cook. The tank is a nice centerpiece in the space, just needs more fish and color. The rocks are white to match the white kitchen and are probably bleached on regular basis to keep this way. At the same time it is clear to see this is brand new kitchen and tank. So maybe they are waiting to cycle the tank before adding more life into it

Im not even convinced those are marine fish in there.  Look like African cichlids maybe?
