Tropic Marin’s new Shake and Make for new hobbyists

By on Jun 15, 2012

Tropic Marin has a new product that is being fleshed out to their European counterparts. The “shake and make” system is an interesting twist for new hobbyists that get attracted to keeping saltwater aquariums. The device is a ship-flat plastic container that expands and holds roughly 5-10 gallons of water. However, inside the container is a pre-measured amount of Tropic Marin’s reef salt that can easily be shaken and mixed before being introduced into a saltwater system. Tropic Marin says this product is designed for people that are new to our hobby and should be hitting local fish stores later this year at an unknown price point. There will be two versions, a nano (pictured) and a full size for larger aquariums.

This is a product that could cause a lot of problems. The salt is allready in there, and then you add the (tap?) water. This way you are bound to get lumbs of salt. How are you sure all the salt has dissolved in the cannister?
If you wan’t to start a marine aquarium, at least you should be able to measure salanity. Otherwise don’t do it!

You’d need some serious guns (like Jake Adams has) to be able to shake a 80+ lbs (10 gallons of saltwater) container of this stuff to mix up the salt!

I was always taught “add salt to water” I wonder how they addressed concerns about individual ingredients in the salt mix precipitating out? I’ll stick with my bucket and refractometer thank you :)
