Reef aquarium from New Zealand is ‘top down’ picturesque

By on Aug 29, 2012

Some reef aquariums are just not meant to be seen from the side, something which is especially the case for this reef from New Zealand. From your traditional side view the tank doesn’t impress above and beyond your typical reef aquarium (although it still looks pretty great), this particular reef absolutely comes to life when viewed from above. The top is how these corals are meant to be seen and how they can convey their full glory — like bright, sweet candy we can’t get enough of.

User ‘Ksmken’ showcases his system on the New Zealand Marine Aquarium Society forum. The display is a 900 liter tank (approximately 240 gallons) measuring 98 x 24 x24 in. (250 x 60 x 60 cm) with a 270 liter (about 70 gallons) sump that is 35 x 24 x 24 in. (90 x 60 x 50 cm). The system is lit by five Maxpect LED fixtures, which do a pretty amazing job pulling out the great rich and wonderful coloration in the corals and adding that colorful ‘pop’ from above. Four Tunze 6155′s on a controller are used to provide flow. Filtration is provided by a Deltec Ap851 and a Bubble Magus NAC7 skimmer. A variety of Zeovit products are dosed, which including Start3, Amino Acids, Potassium iodine fluoride, Iodide Complex Concentrate, Sponge powder, Food7, Coral vitalizer, and Ultra Bac. In addition, Zeo stones and Zeo Carbon are used as well.

To experience the whole system, be sure to check out Ksmken’s build thread over at NZMAS.

Very nice tank there. Have to say though, I absolutely love the side view (more so if the picture was larger :D ) probably a bit more than the top view. Need to take those shots under the surface of the water because those LEDs are very distracting.

Overall though everything looks pretty damn nice, only complaint would be that all the zoas/palythoas seem to be mostly brown with a bit of color. I wonder if that’s because of the LEDs?

Great looking tank.. one question, how the heck does the owner keep the anemones from walking/stinging all the SPS corals?

What kind of efflo is that in the top left of the first image?

Probably not the LEDs, could just be the zoas themselves. Nice tank either way, and I also liked the side shot more, the panoramic view is sweet!

Thanks to reef builders for posting my tank.
    Cheers, Ken.

Ah cell phone, that explains things. Well I have to say most everything else must look absolutely phenomenal if it looks this good with a cell phone shot!
