Digital Aquatics hot software called myReef is so hot that quite a few of customers have been waiting for it for a very long time. Originally the myReef software was slated to be out before the end of 2009. Not so any longer. Digital Aquatics now says because of “system infrastructure” that the myReef won’t be supported until April of next year. For those that are counting, that’s in the 2nd Quarter. We originally predicted a delay up into the 1st quarter but didn’t expect a further delay pushing it into 2Q. Although being disappointed is a feeling we are starting to learn to deal with, it is a very good sign that Digital Aquatics is delaying the launch to make sure everything is “just right”. Here is hoping that they surprise us and release myReef early. We won’t hold our breath.

via [Digital Aquatics]

The myReef application from Digital Aquatics is still in development. This project has experienced delays as we continue working to put the needed system infrastructure in place to support the application. Because the myReef application is completely dependent on the ReefKeeper’s communication, this is clearly a priority for us. While we were optimistic that we would be able to hit our target release, it is now clear that this will not happen.

Based on a number of changes here at Digital Aquatics, we anticipate completion of myReef around the first part of April. This is an attempt to provide a reasonable target given our work load and resources. As stated before, there is always some give and take, things come up that push schedules around and are unavoidable. We are committed to being flexible to the needs of our business to insure we’re able to continue to offer low cost control solutions (in this case free,) to our customers. myReef is still an important part of the ReefKeeper system and we are committed to releasing this application. However, we will not release the software until it meets the standards we have set for it.

We speculated this morning and were spot on as Digital Aquatics officially announced its Reef Keeper Lite will be able to access the NET module with the upcoming firmware version 1.10 that should be available in 4-6 weeks. According to the website:

With our continued development in firmware and technology, we’ve been able to adapt the ReefKeeper Lite to work with the NET module. Originally, we didn’t think this was going to be feasible. With some hard work and improvements, we’ve found a way and this advancement will provide detailed long-term data logging, email notifications and RSS feeds to the ReefKeeper Lite that the NET module already offers the ReefKeeper Elite. Not to mention other future updates scheduled for the NET module!

Even without the NET module, the new firmware will offer plenty of new stuff for the RKL. The firmware upgrade will be a free download for existing owners and all new products will ship with it installed once released. Some of the key highlights for Firmware 1.10 are “Ready-Fit” functions for quick, hassle-free set up of heaters, fans and chillers and new “EasyFlow” menu navigation allowing for quick programming of almost all settings and channel outputs. Â This is some good news offering another upgrade point for budget-conscious reefers. The basic RKL kit retails for $99.99 USD and will be available with the NET module for $379.99 USD. If you already own an RKL or want to upgrade down the road, the NET module runs for $119.99.

We’ve heard rumors and rumblings within the industry about Digital Aquatics Reef Keeper lite. Apparently there is a firmware update in the works or already complete that will allow the Reef Keeper lite to connect to the internet by means of a module of some kind. What this means is that while the Reef Keeper Elite was the only controller that Digital Aquatics provided that connected to the internet, the lower cost Reef Keeper lite will inherit this functionality. If the rumors go as planned we should see this in about 2 months. Keep those fingers crossed.

Digital Aquatics has been on a tear lately with releasing new products, one of their latest products is their popular float valve that integrates without any problems. However, for those owning the Reef Keeper Elite (and lite) you have been waiting for some sort of monitoring software, an upgrade for the MyReef that will work on both the Elite and Lite systems. Digital Aquatics has announced via their support forum that yes MyReef is coming and we need to have some patience:

As soon as we have information that we’re willing to share publicly we’ll post in this forum section. Until we post, you can consider that no news means it’s still a work in progress. As stated, because of issues with competition and the outright copying of Digital Aquatics products and designs, we will be keeping 90% of the myReef details under wraps until the release. The other 10% (as I’m sure that was the next question…) are the features like programming and data logging that everyone can assume will be included.

Hopefully we will see the new software before the end of 2009, however due to the amazing amount of products that are being pushed out from Digital Aquatics we wouldn’t be surprised if it were delayed unit 1Q of 2010.
Personally, we think they should just released them all now and forgo the fanfare at MACNA, but then again we are all gadget geeks here at RB HQ and very impatient.

If you have an iPhone (and really who doesn’t these days) you can pick up an APP that will run your <del datetime="2009-08-27T22:29:54+00:00">old style reef keeper 2</del> from Digital Aquatics. Yes we know, its the old Reef Keeper 2, but all is not lost. The developer that designed the original app is coming out with one that will work with your Reef Keeper Elite system allowing you to sync up with your RKM-NET module and change different settings with your hearts content. Nice. We are estimating it will be between 3-6 months until we get to install the app on our iPhone. Now, if AT&T improved their service here in the States we all might be happy. And I might join the rest of you fanboys, but until then I am staying with my reliable blackberry.

Update: iReef, works with the RKE and the NET module. It does not function with the RK2. Also, it is getting a new revision worked on now. You can read more at the Digital Aquatics support forum.

Digital Aquatics is running a promotion during the summers months on the new Reef Keeper lite system. Originally priced at $149, the summer promotion will be allowing customers to purchase the new controller system for only $99. The promotion is expected to be available in the next few weeks. The press release from Digital Aquatics is found below.

“Digital Aquatics is excited to announce, that we will be running a summer, economic stimulus, promotion on our RKL (L1) package!

Currently, the RKL (L1) retails for $149 and comes with four outlets a temp probe and a head unit. The RKL can be expanded to interface with up to four modules (16 outlets,) and can monitor multiple pH probes, temp probes and will soon be able to monitor and control salinity! It’s the perfect controller for a nano tank! Not to mention, when and if you want, the RKL can quickly be upgraded to an RKE while you completely retain your initial investment!

The RKL has only been out for about 4 1/2 months and already has a bigger following than most other controllers! We’ve recently been able to secure a much larger volumes of parts as our vendors are looking to reduce their inventories; we’re going to pass this on to you!

Starting in about 1-2 weeks the RKL (L1) package will go on sale for $99.99!

Check out our website for more info about this little giant of a controller. We’ll also post there when the promotion starts.

Thank you again,
DA “

The reefkeeper lite has been out for a little while now and it is surprising to us that we haven’t seen many shots of it in the wild. This shot which gave us the chuckles, is positioned in place by yes, you guessed it: push pins. Interestingly we have rumors that a new firmware update is about to hit the Reef Keeper lite and that’s not all, a rumored price decrease could be in the works as well. Our guess would be sometime in mid June. Just how much of a price decrease remains to be seen, but that is something you’ll never hear us moan about.

-BREAKING NEWS FROM DIGITAL AQUATICS-

The RKL will be able to interface with all ReefKeeper Modules* in the
next firmware release, (do out soon!) This will provide salinity and
MANY more options for the RKL in the coming months as we roll out new
modules, probes and features! This will also open up a world of options
never before offered in a control at this level! There is NO entry/mid
level controller currently offered that can do 1/2 of what the RKL can
do or as easy!

There are currently NO bugs reported for the RKL! This controller is
about as easy as it gets to program and operate even for the newest
user! If you purchase an RKL and aren't completely satisfied, return it
within 30 days (in new condition) no questions asked**! Our only goal
is to make sure you're happy with your controller purchase!

We stand behind our products and thank you for your business!

If you have ANY questions please don't hesitate to ask!

Thank you,
DA
