Looks like Halodule wrightii ( aka shoal grass ), I have some growing but recently it has died back a bit. If it starts to make a comeback and you havent located any yet I'll be happy to help you out. Let me see if I can come up with a vendor for you.

Here's one, Gulf coast ecosystems these guys get a bit testy about winter shipping so you might want to contact them first.

i'll add more to this post if I can find em.

Looks like these guys have some also Florida pets looks like their websites a bit messed up though.

Make sure you call these guys first the seagrasses tend to be seasonal

alright, thanks! I want to have a DSB in a 10g tank then have some seagrass growing on top and connect that to my sump/fuge with my 55. It will be a long term project so I am trying to gather up a lot of info now.

"Applying this, the majority of seagrasses require 200 to 600 micromoles/m2/sec of light and the Halophila genus requires 100 micromoles/m2/sec."
-beyond the refugium: seagrass aquaria

can anyone explain this to me? Im not sure if I understand. What it sounds like is they need 6700k light and it should be fairly strong, probably around 5-7wpg.

can anyone confirm this or at least correct me? And if nothing else add your input.

Think this will be good enough? It will be for a 10g tank.

I have no idea what she said there, its written a bit beyond my level of understanding. I have had Halodule and Thallasia doing well under fairly low light. There's an outdoor light fixture they sell at HD made Lights of America, its 6500k and 65 watts. For under $50 Halodule would do really well in a 10g under it. In my area its also available as an 85 and 100 watt fixture. It takes a large screw in CF bulb.

Hmmmm, I may have to look into that. Do you think they would sell it at home depot or lowes? If not, I think Ill go with the 96w fixture I listed above.

Some observations on what I have read so far:Most of these plants are shallow water plants. The must be used to a lot of sun so more than likely normal aquarium lighting would work well. That 7 inch sand bed sounds just about right. The shallow tank is out for most of them with some growing to 20 inch length. They are flow loving just like coral at 20x being good.

Yup, Ill get a tall tank like a 30 high or larger. Ill get the lights that are suggested above by graveyard. Then I have a bunch of extra powerheads laying around ill use for flow. And if worst comes to worst, Ill just get some MJ's from ebay.

30 inch high isnt necessary for Halodule, Thallasia, or Halophila. By going with such a tall tank it will also increase your lighting needs. Halodule and Halophila can be kept successfully with a shallow 2 - 3 inch sand bed. Thallasia will require a deeper sand bed. My Thallasia and Halodule are in an 18 inch tall tank with a 5 - 6 inch sand bed and are growing well. The Thallasia does touch the waters surface, but the Halodule doesnt even come close. Halophila only grows up tp about 2 inches tall and wouldnt be a problem at all in a short tank. Halodule would be fine in a 10g tank with shallow sand bed.

Hmmm....then maybe I will just go with a normal 30g tank with a 4-5" DSB.

They are amazing! The only reason I am going for the seagrass tank is because my mom is going to let me plumb it into my system through the wall! So the furnace room will now also be my "fish room"! Exhilerating!

On the bottom of this page Lights of America model #'s 9265, 9266, and 9267. The two below these use the same type bulb but are in increasing wattage. I've also used the 85 watt one on my refuge with excellent results.

Thanks for the link. Ill definately have to look into that some more. I just noticed they sell at walmart and lowes. Ill get there tomorrow anc check it out.

what about getting some grow lights from the shopright garden center? As long as they are powerful and have the right color temp, I think they should be fine.
Ill have to go and see what they have tomorrow.

Nativevaman,
Everyone wants to know how to get grass of some sort. Even post links on where to get it. And this post even tells you the best lighting to use grow it. Could be why we cant do the math on the other post! lol

I have a 30g tank I gave to my friend, but now he doesnt want it anymore so I am taking it back. The tank has a slight bend to it. Is this OK to still use? I have been using it for a little over 2 years now. but I dont want to hook it into my system just for it to drain everything.
