These days travelers to the Red Sea might be surprised to find a new construction stretching along its seabed. But don’t be too surprised since this is the project by the Israel Nature Parks Authority in which Israel experts and volunteers take part. The aim of the project is to create the first artificial coral reef by the coast of Elat. Scientists hope that the new artificial reef, inhabited by colourful corals, will draw away tourists’ attention from the other natural reefs. Researchers say that many of those are damaged by tourists who come to explore the exotic flora and fauna of the Red Sea.
Elat schoolchildren also take part in the project, guided by experts from the Ben Gurion University.
Fragile coral reefs attract thousands of divers from all over the world. However, because of the great amount of tourists and ecological deterioration corals are on the brink of extinction now.
