While some of us have moved our fair share of reef tanks to new homes and living spaces, few of us, if any at all have moved actual coral reefs. That is exactly what the scientists and coral gurus did in Dubai. “Experts quickly dismissed traditional methods of moving coral as too damaging to the fragile marine creatures. So scientists and engineers hatched a plan, believed to be a world-first, which involved moving more than 1,100 coral-encrusted rocks, each weighing about five tonnes. But they had to be removed, lifted, and transported by barge without them ever leaving the water.” The coral was moved, like planned and studies are currently ongoing to determine the effectiveness of the move. However, once the site has become reestablished, the site could become a popular dive site that we can visit.
