For the past decade, I have used either a Stockman or Durso standpipe in my overflows to silence the dreaded gurgle. Recently, I found the need to build a new stand pipe. But before heading to my local hardware store for the PVC fittings, I decided to check out what was available online. That’s when I discovered the Maggie Muffler. The Maggie is a simple but effective design, and makes the addition of a standpipe silencer much easier. These bell-like contraptions are already fairly popular with local reefers out west. I ordered two from an online etailer, and have to say that I’m very impressed. They are actually less noisy than any DIY Durso I have ever made. Taking it apart, it resembles a Stockman Standpipe. All you need is a pvc stand pipe cut to the length of your choice. Install the pipe, and pop the muffler on top. Voila, you’re done. I don’t mean to imply that Dursos or Stockmans are a challenge to put together, but this makes an easy project even easier. It’s also painless to remove, disassemble, and clean. Next time you’re putting a reef together, check them out! A few more pics of the assembled Maggie Muffler after the break.
