Bodianus paraleucosticticus is a rare and highly sought after hogfish that doesn’t doesn’t get much airtime in the aquarium scene. The five-striped hogfish has a large range which spans from PNG, Bali, Palau, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, and the Cook Islands. This particular specimen came from Holmes Reef in the Coral Sea 220km to the East of Cairns at a depth of 50-60m by Cairns Marine. The fish is also MAC certified due to Cairns Marine being Australia’s only MAC accredited collection facility.
Like other fishes collected by Cairns Marine, the lovely hogfish above was sustainable caught using hand nets and barrier nets. These collection practices do not harm the reefs and ensure sustainable fishing practices. Check out the video below from Cairns Marine showing how collection of Blue and Yellow Assessors are carried out. Be sure to check out other of their fish collection videos!
