The Pro-Tein Clean is a new protein skimmer with a novel design which promises truly plug & play operation. Now we’ve seen our fair share of protein skimmers promising to be completely free of hassle, adjustment, and maintenance, but the Pro-Tein Clean appears to have a few tricks up its sleeve.
First of all, there are no valves to adjust on the Pro-Tein Clean, and a novel type of valve doesn’t feed air to the skimmer pump until the water level has reached a specified height. With this valve the Pro-Tein Clean can also operate in water that is as shallow as one inch deep, and its water intake section is designed to take advantage of this feature.
We could take their word for it, but you can see the features of the Pro-Tein Clean clearly illustrated in the demonstration video – there are no plumbing valves to adjust, and the skimmer just does what it’s supposed to right out of the box. Some models of Tunze skimmers are self-leveling but the Pro-Tein Clean appears to be the most plug & play we’ve ever encountered.
There is no mention of the skimmers’ specifications like air draw, pump brand & model, or what size aquarium is it is rated for. But we hazard to guess that the Pro-Tein Clean is using some kind of Sicce pump, it should be suitable for between 100 and 200 gallons.
The big wild card about the Pro-Tein Clean is how much it will cost – the construction and parts used in its assembly seem straightforward enough, but this patented protein skimmer design may carry with it some kind of ‘Intellectual Property tax’. We’ll just have to wait and see when the skimmer becomes available following its December 6th unveiling at the 2pm at the Muckleshoot Casino in Auburn Washington.
