Have you ever wanted to talk to your dive buddy underwater? Well now you can with the Toucan communication system by Voice In The Sea. Rather than being a sophisticated electronic communication device, the Toucan recreates the environment that we naturally speak in, air.
Voice In The Sea’s underwater speaking devices consist of a simple silicone tube, with soft touch mouth and earpieces. By clearing the water from the tube while underwater, it is possible to have short but audible speech to your dive buddy to communicate beyond the basic underwater hand signals.
Obviously, you’ll need to be proficient at breathing underwater and timing your breath to use the Toucan while underwater. You won’t want to use the Toucan throughout your dive, but if there’s something important that needs to be clearly said, an experienced diver can quickly deploy this speaking tube for getting a quick message across to his or her dive buddy.
There’s also a Narrator version of the Toucan which trades the earpiece for a small camera attachment so you can narrate some particularly interesting portions of your underwater video clips. We don’t think beginner divers should be using the Toucan or Narrator themselves, they should be focused on their dives and equipment.
However their dive leaders could use the Toucan for giving beginner divers advice and pointers underwater, or even words of encouragement for divers who are just beginning to develop a degree of comfort underwater. The Toucan easily folds up and clips to your BCD and at just $39, this is one accessory that could really come in handy when you absolutely need to say something that can’t be signaled.
