Hole In The Wall
This dive is a fan favorite in Roatan that has advanced divers coming back year after year requesting this site by name. The dive starts at the top of the wall near 30 feet (9m) as you descend between an illuminated chasm down to 130 feet (40m).
Becuase of the depth, this dive is only for experienced divers with advanced certification or higher. Once you reach the end of the hole you find yourself floating in the blue above a sloping wall. Keep your eyes in the blue for schools of jack fish, eagles rays, turtles, and reef sharks.
On the deepest part of the wall, you can find Agaricia lamarckiana a distinctive coral with bright white polyps. This coral is only found on deep walls and there are three large colonies right at the exit of the chasm. The common name for this coral is the sheet coral as it grows in large sheets.
We could have spent the entier dive just exploring the area right below the chasm, to the left you have a sheer drop, to the right you have a large sandy patch surrounded by corals. We found a beautiful stingray posing in the sand before flying into the blue.
From here the dive continues left or right along the wall. Your guide will let you know before the dive which way you are heading and it all depends on the currents. From here drift as you make your way back up to the top of the wall.
Hole is the wall makes for an excellent deep dive as the top of the wall leads to a nice shallow reef. This way you can stretch out the dive and experience a diversity from deep to shallow.
We were invited to Roatan to explore scuba diving around the island with EcoDivers Roatan. Their dive shop is located on the northern side of Roatans West End, inside the Half Moon Resort.
The dive center is open to the public for certified and non-certified divers. EcoDiver has a laidback environment with skilled passionate staff. Their dives have an emphasis on conservation awareness. To learn more or book your trip to EcoDivers please visit their website. www.ecodiversroatan.com
