Before going to Reefapalooza NY from Denver earlier this summer, you could say I took a slight detour to Maryland and then the State College Pennsylvania before heading to the big show. The reef aquarium circuit doesn’t seem to take me round those parts often enough but I wanted to make some long overdue visits to two very important persons of the reef aquarium hobby.
The first product of this effort is a video spotlight of Sanjay Joshi’s very old, unconventional and very successful soft coral nano reef aquarium. When I was planning to visit Sanjay the only aquarium I had in mind was his next-level 500 gallon Acropora dominated tank, but his nano reef is every bit as worthy of its own video feature.
This tank is, at 23 years old, already a little bit a part of history because this is the aquarium that the parents of the Black Photon Clownfish originally paired and mated in. It’s also the first tank Sanjay ever tried using LEDs on, with the PFO Solaris, and it has been Dr. Joshi’s test bed for LED fixtures ever since.
There’s some very valuable kernels of coral reefing wisdom in this tank, and discussed in this video. It’s not that straightforward to have a skimmerless reef tank full of corals, a respectable number of fish, and no more water changes. Big thanks to Dr. Joshi for being a long time friend in the aquarium hobby, and I’m super glad we squeezed in this marvelous and very old reef tank for a video during my visit.
Be sure and subscribe to the Reef Builders Video youtube channel if you haven’t already because the love for coral reefing never stops, and we’ve got some amazing videos in the pipeline that will knock your socks off!
