The Powerbreather by Ameo is an innovative product that radically upends what a snorkel can be. The current crop of snorkels on the diving market are mostly intended to be compatible with SCUBA gear but Ameo has abandoned this paradigm in order to create a device which embraces the sport of swimming, snorkeling and freediving.
At first glance our first notion of the Powerbreather was to lump it with the goofy over-the-head full face masks and snorkels but this device is in a league of its own. The dual pipe design allows swimmers and snorkelers to pull in more air and faster upon breaching the surface and a specially designed air flow system only allows exhaled air to exit through the front-mounted purge valve.
Most snorkels allow for some exhaled breath to pass through the snorkel tube, meaning that we inhale some of this air and the higher CO2 that it carries. It might be a small volume of air but over time this gas builds up in swimmers’ blood and tissues leading to premature fatigue.
The design of the Powerbreather will enable swimmers and snorkelers to get more fresh air faster, and it prevents the inhalation the CO2, increasing depth, stamina and bottom time for freediving. You really have to be dedicated to the tank-less diving sports to use a Powerbreather but at just around $110 this is a reasonable investment to get the most from diving on your own breath.
