This may be a small tank, but it is definitely an interesting design. The hobbyist who designed this unique aquascape — Pongpit Zhang from Guiyang, China — has achieved a cool look where it appears as if the reef is floating in the water. We saw this video on YouTuber CoralFish12g‘s page and had to share.
Although the video doesn’t dive into the “build” and concept, from looking at the bare rock image at the end of the video, Zhang suspended a piece of rack from the top, side area of the tank and has attached his frags around the rock to give it a fully encrusted look. The added touch of air plants gives it a more organic feel as well.
The tank itself is on the small side at 10 gallons and it may be hard to replicate on a larger setup unless you are able to utilize some lightweight materials. It will also need close grooming as any significant coral growth can easily overcrowd the rock taking away from the overall look he achieved in this look. The variety of corals gives it nice visual appeal that may be lost if dominated by certain corals.
Overall, we like this look and it definitely makes you stop and look. We always appreciate a natural look, but have grown to like unusual and outside the box thinking like this.
