There have been a large number of Australian Scolies that have been described as ‘Rainbow’ but perhaps none have been more deserving of that description than this one. This Homophyllia australis was recently acquired by ACI Aquaculture from an Australian supplier and it is still small at under two inches fully open.
Even at the size of an American half dollar this solitary large polyp stony coral displays literally every color under the rainbow; neon green, pink, yellow, orange, a little pink and magenta as well as apparent blues in the dark regions. The colorific Australian Scolie has already been sold to one of ACI’s better customers and we really hope we get to see how its rainbow colored tissue develops and changes as the coral grows and acclimates to aquarium life.
After all the Australian Scolie specimens that we’ve featured over the last decade we thought we’d seen the full extent of colors that this species is capable of, but apparently this iconic coral group can still impress even the most experienced coral fanciers.
