The Grotech MacroAlgae Breeder is a natural biological filtration system to reduce excess nutrients like nitrate and phosphate in saltwater aquariums. The MacroAlage Breeder or chaetomorpha reactors such as this work best with red algae family (e.g. Gracilaria curtissiae) or wire algae (e.g. Chaetomorpha linum).
The Grotech MacroAlgae Breeder is equipped with a specially developed LED lighting system inside the reactor to ensures maximum algae growth. The light in the reactor is reflected by the inner surface of the body, thus ensuring optimum illumination and maximum algae growth.
Algaes inside the reactor thrive on phosphates and nitrates which are dissolved in the aquarium water. By harvesting and removing the macroalgae, excessive nutrients are removed from the aquarium water which helps maintain a natural biological balance.
The Grotech MacroAlgae-Breeder can be used both inside and outside the filter tank. The supply of water is provided by a hose connection to the central pump of the aquarium or a separate feed pump (not included), which should stream slowly and evenly through the device.
Algae growing inside the reactor also become a refuge for zooplankton and crustaceans such as copepods, Mysis. This small zooplankton is then flushed out through the outlet and serve as natural food in the aquarium creatures.
The harvested algae can be used:
- For permanent removal of the excessive nitrate and phosphate
- To provide natural food for algae-eating fish (thus returning the nutrients removed)
The Grotech MacroAlgae-Breeder is available in three different sizes (MAB120, MAB180, MAB220) and is suitable for aquariums from 100-1800Liter.
