It’s funny how the internet works sometimes, and this week we’ve been pleasantly surprised to see one of Jake Adams’ news stories from way back in 2014 go viral on Twitter. We think the origin of the resurgence comes from a post on ugly critters, only that has somehow morphed into a picture of the Pink Porcupine Crab labeled as a new species (it was actually described in 1894,) and that its somewhat unusual spiny appearance is down to global warming.
The result is that the Twitter video has been viewed 3.5 million times, the OP has been liked 35,000 times, and with that, Jake’s post. We’d like to think that the truth got there in the end however as Jake’s post is being linked to and shared not because it’s a new species, malformed from Global Warming, but because it’s a deep water King Crab species that was videoed in 2014, and not newly described, or down to Climate Change.
To get the low down on what all the fuss is about, here’s the original news story.
