We’ve brought in a lot of great reefers to feature on the Reef Therapy podcast and this week’s guest, Jason Brown of Instagram’s unorthodox_reef, is certainly one of them. For those who haven’t seen Jason’s reef tank before, it is a monster at 96”x36”x27.5” high and holds 400 gallons of water.
Jason explains why and how he got the tank, and how you really have to beef up the lighting, flow, and dosing on a tank of that size to provide the corals with what they need. He also weighs up Kalkwasser versus 2-part dosing on a tank of that size, and which one he prefers to run while he’s away or on vacation.
Keen fishkeepers will also spot several Angelfish residing in the unorthodox_reef tank, including a Majestic, Regal, Tiger Tail Coral Beauty, and a Kingi, or Tiger angelfish, Apolemichthys kingi. Jason tells Remy about how he deals with the nipping and fighting tendencies of Angels, and what damage (if any,) they do to his soft, LPS, and SPS corals.
If you’re starting to feel the stresses of Christmas this is definitely one episode that will serve to soothe you. Give it a watch or listen, and make sure you subscribe to the Reef Therapy podcast and tune in to future episodes.
