Dimmable Metal Halide Galaxy Ballasts headed your way

By on Nov 03, 2009

These Galaxy Metal Halide ballasts are said to be dimmable. But, not dimmable in the way we would expect, such as the Elos SunColor. We somehow missed reporting these at MACNA, but these new ballasts will allow you to have access to either 150w, 175w, 250w and a 250w turbo mode, so that you can change the wattage depending on the bulb that is in the unit. There is also another dimmable metal halide Galaxy ballast that includes 250w, 250w HQI, and 400w turbo mode. We’re told that this turbo mode being something like a magnetic 400w HQI (aka 430w HPS), but we have no hard data yet on the mater. We’re also been told that “the most important factor is that people use the correct wattage lamp with the correct setting.  It’s not made to drive a 400w lamp at 250w, or a 250w at 400w.  It does not work magic in that regard, it just allows a single ballast to be used in more applications.” Which makes sense. No word on MSRP.

400w “turbo charged” being something like a magnetic 400w HQI (aka 430w HPS), but Im only speculating.

I can’t wait for these. No longer do I need multiple different ballasts to run different wattage bulbs.

Yeah this is a very cool new ballast. Seems like this product should have been released a long time ago, very very nice. It’s exciting to see some innovation make it to the reef aquarium hobby.

Talked to the Galaxy guys at MACNA, was going to buy one, but got distracted. It looks like a very nice product, as Greg said above, no need to have different ballast around to run different watt bulbs……..makes it easyer to play around with lighting to find what looks best.

Ryan you didnt miss reporting them at MACNA, we didnt have them yet! Our first showing of the product was at Reefapalooza.

Just to clarify, the 400w version has 400w, as well as 400w Turbo Charged.

MSRP should be the same as the regular Galaxy ballasts.
