Wet Circuits’ waterproof power strip now available from Hydrofarm dealers

The Wet Circuits waterproof powerstrip is a surprising electrical device which actually mixes well with water. Last year we reported on this new waterproof power strip which instantaneously shuts off power to outlets which are short circuited by water or other kinds of hazards. The aquarium hobby is one which necessitates a lot of water being around, which has invariably caused more than a few issues when the electrical devices are exposed to water, especially saltwater.

Now the new waterproof powerstrip from Wet Circuits is actually available for purchase and it seems like the original MSRP of $35 has turned into the wholesale price as the Wet Circuits is now listing for $69.95 on the Hydrofarm website. As before, the four outlet powerstrip can handle up to 1650 watts of power and the six fot power cord is still plenty of room for you to get install a drip loop, just in case.

I think they priced themselves out of the market. $35 was a stretch, but not unthinkable. $70 is just silly.

Really? You think $70 is too much for the peace of mind that comes with knowing this powerstrip has your back?

How does it provide more protection than a $15 GFCI?

Independent circuits means that if one outlet of this power strip fails, the others keep running. A powerstrip plugged into a GFCI will be completely turned off in case of a problem, meaning that every other device on that PS will also be out of power.

Yes I think $70 is too much for a device that allows you to be lazy (correction… dangerously lazy). Want to use power strips? Fine. Don’t over load them, don’t put them where water can drip into them, don’t let wires run such that a water doesn’t get a free slide right into the socket. Be smart in the first place and then you don’t have to buy devices like this. Also put something that’s not too flammable between your strip your wooden cabinet.

That said, I’m sure if this gets out to other dealers, some who don’t believe doubling the MSRP is the only way to make money you’ll see these for a bit cheaper.

If it does provide individual protection for each outlet I can see how it might be useful for a nano or other tank running off a single wall outlet, albeit still a little pricy. It would be silly though for anyone with a larger tank that already uses several outlets to get one of these rather than a box of three GFCI outlets at Home Depot for $20. Use the balance for frags or take the family to Chipotle. Twice.

Yeah, but a GFCI wouldn’t be able to work under the situation below…
