Capable craftsman FrankD over at German aquarium forum Matuta gives a rundown on the MOAM (Mother of all Algae Magnets). Designed to be ultra safe for acrylic and capable of scraping algae on curved surfaces, the MOAM is loosely based on a production algae removing magnet by Schuran called the Magnoclean. With rubber bumper wheels and dual scraping surfaces, this feat of DIYing used a Tunze algae magnet scraper as a base to which further modifications were added. It’s a pity that this project was eventually abandoned because the magnets were too powerful for FrankD’s application such that they were nearly impossible to pull apart. For now the similar Magnoclean is prohibitively expensive for all but the largest tanks but simply looking at the features of the bumper wheel concept makes us wich that there were more algae removing magnets available on the market with some of these features.
Who knew that so much DIY could go into an algae magnet cleaner
