Aqua System is a new miniature HID spot lighting system from Wavepoint Lighting. These diminutive lamps look like a single bulb LED lamp but at 35 watts each, the Aqua System HID spot light is packing a lot more light (and probably a bit more heat) than our 5-15 watt LED spotlights. The nano halides are expected to be released near the end of the year with an estimated retail price of $150 and the lamps will be available in a white or blue-white color options. The clip-on lamp fixture is ideal for some of the trimless nano reef aquariums but we can think of a ton of covered nano tank owners who will be bummed to be excluded from using this lamp. The Aqua System HID spot light is quite attractive with a metal support base and balanced hemispherical reflector and it will be available in a black and a silver finish. The remote ballast will have to be stored somewhere, adding to the footprint of the lamp outside the tank and we wonder about the longevity and replacement cost of new lamps. The value of this new miniature HID spot light form factor is undeniable but with the much more efficient LED lamps and spotlights rounding the corner to the aquarium market, the enrgy consumptiona nd heat production of a mini metal halide will give some reasson for pause to prospective buyers. We’d particularly like to see how this 35 watt halide lamp stacks up next to a 15 watt PAR 38 LED lamp and how their performances compare over time in light output and power consumption.
