Online vendor Reef Specialty is teasing us with the new Diablo cone skimmer available shortly exclusively at Reef Specialty. The Diablo is designed for smaller tank owners looking to get the performance of a cone skimmer in a smaller footprint. The cone is a 6-inch base with a 3-inch neck with a total footprint of 12 1/2″ x 8 1/2 x 19 1/2″ tall to fit in those smaller sumps. Powered by a Diablo/Devil pinwheel 13 Watt pump, the skimmer is clocked at pulling 25 SCFH or 700 liters of air per hour. The Diablo features all the skimmer nuances we have grown to love and expect on the market — bubble chamber/plate, silencer, wedge pipe for water level control and a simple twist turn collection cup with a very minimal clearance to remove, empty and clean. The Diablo also went the route of a quality venturi and solid pinwheel design instead of rocking the meshwheel. Those of you who live and die by the meshwheel, could easily mod this one but no use if the skimmer is running efficiently and producing nice nasty skimmer “nog” daily. Word on the street is the Diablo will be ready to ship in the next two months and without official pricing from Reef Specialty, the Diablo should come in around $300 but make sure to check back with the vendor on the final sticker price.
