Say what you will about Tunze’s Stick-in-a-Box, er black mangrove kit, these little halophilic tree-shrubs actually looked quite nice sitting on Tunze booth tables at Interzoo. Tunze’s black mangroves actually looked so nice, that we sat down to eat and drink at the Tunze 50th anniversary party for like half an hour before we realized these were not just houseplants but the neat, full leaved black mangrove plants that Roger’s been telling us about. If you’ve grown a red mangrove and been disappointed by the bi-monthly leaf growth then you’ll definitely feel more reward by growing the black mangrove. It is a lot less twiggy and we expect that these could be groomed into very nice looking bonsai mangroves within a year or two. The black mangroves should start shipping to the US near the end of summer, early fall but on a side note, can you iimagine us trying to explain to german-speaking Axel Tunze the true meaning of “Stick-in-a-box”?
