The KZ LED is not a product we expected to see from Korallen Zucht at InterZoo a few weeks back. The famous creators of the Zeovit method are better known for exotic additives in funky blue bottles and exotic protein skimmers made in funky orange colors. So when we saw this Italian made LED light sitting cozy in the Korallen Zucht booth, it immediately piqued our interest. the four foot KZ LED light was sporting three modules of 48 Cree XR series LEDs running at one watt each with 30 whites, 12 blues and 6 red LEDs. There is a basic controller that comes with this KZ LED light but we don’t read Italian or German so it was difficult to put it through anything but a demo mode. Without slapping the KZ LED over a tank it is impossible to know exactly how the color rendition would have looked, especially over ZEOvit style pastel colored SPS. The KZ LED is basically one big slab of heatsink with some high quality LEDs pumping photons through a primary optic. The method of driving so many LEDs at just a single definitely makes for very high luminous efficiency and good spread but reduced intensity will be an issue for this light at depths exceeding 18 inches or so. It was a bit disappointing not to see any royal blues adding to the color rendition of this light and depending on the price this light could stand to be using newer generation XP series Cree LEDs. However, the KZ LED was only being showed off in prototype form and this design could go to the drawing board numerous times before going into full scale production and availability. As this light is still very early in it’s development, pricing is unknown but you can follow the break for lots more pics. Huge thanks to Alexander Girz for helping us manhandle the KZ LED into proper display poses.
