The Nemo Marine Systems SmartFan ventilation system is looking to cool your aquarium while reducing the number of power cords on your system. While using muffin or computer fans to control your tanks temperature is nothing new, the beauty of Nemo Marine’s SmatfFan system is its plug-and-play nature allowing you to connect up to six fans on one power supply. The kits come with 4-inch (120 mm) fans that crank out 93 cfm of air movement and reach only 37 dB in the noise department at its highest setting. More details after the break.
The system uses two types of fans, a standard and a heavy-duty fan with the same performance characteristics except for the HD using an epoxy-encapsulated motor to keep away damage from salt. The custom cables come in 1 m, 2 m or 3 m lengths with simple push-in connectors on both ends making it a “snap” to hook up the fans.
The system itself can be run to go all the time, set on a timer or can integrated into your existing aquarium controller setup through a controllable outlet tied into your temperature sensor. Unlike the Silent Air system by MCU Research we touched on before, the SmartFan system doesn’t have an integrated temperature sensor in the module but the fans do include thermistors to add automated variable speeds depending on the ambient temperature. Besides, the ability to tie it into your controller makes for one less “box” to worry about.
The basic unit starts at $99.95 and will get you the power supply, connection bar for up to six outlets, and two standard fans with cable lengths of your choice. Another great feature is you can mix and match the fans in case you want a pair of the heavy duty for the canopy and a couple stand fans to move air in your sump. The company plans on introducing more fans in the future to allow you to integrate a higher performance or larger fans to dial in your setup to meet your specifications.
