The Proflex sump from Aqueon is one of the first mass produced filters we’ve seen that is modular enough to swing three ways. The base model of the Proflex is a standard Berlin filter style sump with a bubble baffle and noise reducing compartment, feeding into two standard 4″ diameter filter socks. From there an adjustable spillway leads into a middle chamber which can be left as is for use with a protein skimmer, turned into a refugium, or converted into a true wet dry area with a special kit which is available separately. After that, a standard issue filter chamber can handle your foam block or other media so you can get all in one filtration. We don’t know what is more surprising; that this sump is actually well thought out and one of the most flexible we’ve ever seen or that it was designed and produced from a company (Central Pet) which is more or less an outsider to the mainstream reef aquarium hobby. In any case, with Central Pet’s Aqueon having a wide reach (death grip) and distributing to thousands of stores nationwide, we’ll be seeing these sumps in action on reef tanks coast to coast irregardless of it’s fairly decent quality. The Aqueon Proflex sump comes in four sizes, for tanks from 55 to 200 gallons and they start at about $200 with no pump, light or wet dry inserts. Your LFS is probably the first place to look for the Proflex sump but should they be out, Doctors Foster and Smith can probably ship you one in no time. Demo video and lots more pictures after the break.
