Marineland just released information on their new Reef capable LED lighting fixtures to the masses. We first reported the Reef Capable light back in March and it looks like Marineland is finally ready to get this LED light to production. This new Reef Capable line still uses the slim stylized lighting profile of their double bright systems but supports reef aquariums with the addition of energy efficient 1 watt LEDs. You might have remembered their DoubleBright LED systems, and yes these new Reef Capable LED lighting ups the ante. Each Marineland Reef capable LED offers two modes of lighting, Daytime which includes white and blue LEDs and Lunar, which uses the Blue LEDs only. The Reef capable LEDs will hit retailers in October with pricing starting at $199.99 for the 18″ model. Drop down below for the Gallery to look at PAR numbers, LUX and additional imagery on Marineland’s newest LED light.
With a peak intensity of 130 umol of PAR at 12 inches and 64 umol at 24 inches, the Reef Capable LED from Marineland is significantly brighter than the previous Double Bright LED strip. Not only is the Reef Capable LED much brighter than the Double Bright, it brings the same great styling to the reefing table that we predicted would be the case when we reviewed the Double Bright LED. For us the Double Bright LED was not about what it could do then, but the future that it foretold with Marineland being a part of the more significant LED lighting market which is now coming to fruition with the Reef Capable LED.

What is particularly fascinating about the Reef Capable LED (RC LED) is that not only does Marineland step up the game for themselves with a brighter light for the reefing hobby, but they also push the envelope of LED design and styling for everyone else. Think about it, what other light delivers on this level of intensity while being about as svelte as your average netbook? With the release of the Reef Capable LED we’re going to see lots of other companies copying Marineland’s RC LED and trying to make their fixtures as thin and as bright. But mostly as thin. The Reef Capable is a sexy mass market LED fixture and we very much look forward to seeing and handling the RC LED in person very soon.
