Mysis Feast from Reef Nutrition is one of the most significant new food product offerings from the company that brought us convenient feeding of Arctic copepods, concentrated phytoplankton and oyster “parts”. What is particularly exciting about Mysis Feast is that its not just any type of mysis they’re using, its the hands-down most popular freshwater mysis from Piscine Energetics. Power users of PE Mysis will be well familiar with the usual routine of pulling the frozen PE from the freezer, thawing it and then giving it at least a light rinse to remove the extremely rich ‘sauce’ that the mysis is frozen with. This is no longer the case for feeding Mysis Feast: now all that is required to feed PE mysis goodness to your fish is to reach in the fridge, squirt some Mysis Feast into an area of fast water flow in your tank and watch your fish enjoy. We’re not sure what kind of magic tricks Reef Nutrition had to invent to encapsulate PE Mysis into a solution that only needs to be refrigerated, but we like it.
For several weeks we’ve been using Mysis Feast to feed a wide range of marine fish including large and dwarf angelfish, clownfish and damsels, eels, gobies and anthias. The one thing we’ve noticed is that as with other Reef Nutrition products, if the solution is squirted into the tank without exposure to some water flow to rinse off the solution, the scent is masked and the fish spit it out a few times before finally ingesting it. So make sure that you squirt Mysis Feast into a flow stream and then feeding one of the most nutritious meaty foods to your fish will be almost as easy as feeding pellets. Mysis Feast is still about a month from beginning to trickle out to retailers but when it does we suspect that Reef Nutrition will have their hands full in keeping up with demand.
