Phosballs are a new Biopellet from the new Polish aquarium chemistry company SeaSlug. Their first product offering is a high purity biopellet called Phosballs which are part of the “next generation” of solid carbon dosing. Unlike most biopellets, Phosballs start working rather quickly with the effects of reduced nutrients being visible in many SPS corals within a few days. Of course we don’t advocate this kind of accelerated chemistry adjustments but they’re saying it’s possible.
Furthermore, SeaSlug says that Phosballs will not cause cloudy water like some other biopellets made with fillers, and it won’t release toxic gases or pull down the pH. We haven’t heard any reports of the latter two effects but cloudy water has definitely been an issue with some Biopellet users. The particular recipe of biopellet which Phosballs are made from has been in testing for over four months and they are just now coming out of their burrow to tell the world of the successes they are having. The best case scenario would be the ZEOvit like coloration of the corals featured on their website, some of which can be seen in the inset image.
It’ll probably be a few weeks to a month before widespread US and European distribution is sorted out but with the modest pricing of €15 for 250ml and €27.50 for 500ml, these Phosballs biopellets will at least have affordability going for them.
